There have been rumblings of a potential new Goosebumps TV show circulating for a while, especially since there have been two live-action movies in recent years. Now we have confirmation that a live-action Goosebumps TV series is moving forward at Disney Plus.

This exclusive scoop comes from Variety, with the outlet breaking the news earlier today. Variety reports that this new series based on the beloved books by R.L. Stine was first being reported as in the works back in April 2020. Disney Plus has now officially given the show a 10-episode order.

Goosebumps TV series live-action reboot coming to Disney Plus

Here’s what we know about the official plot:

"The series follows a group of five high schoolers who unleash supernatural forces upon their town and must all work together – thanks to and in spite of their friendships, rivalries, and pasts with each other – in order to save it, learning much about their own parents’ teenage secrets in the process."

It sounds a little different from the original story. It actually sounds a bit like Riverdale in some aspects, but it’s also relatively early in the process so it’s hard to get an idea of what direction the show will go in until Disney Plus releases more information.

Of course, the upcoming show is not the first Goosebumps TV show. Stine’s massive anthology book series was previously adapted into an adaptation that ran from 1995 to 1998. You can revisit that one at any time on Netflix.

Disney also previously adapted Stine’s graphic novel series Just Beyond into a horror comedy anthology that is now streaming on the service. I imagine that the new show will feel more like Just Beyond and the 2015 and 2018 live-action movies than the show from the 90s.

Another reason for that is because Goosebumps will be executive produced by Neal H. Moritz, a producer on the previous two films featuring Jack Black. Nick Stoller and Rob Lettermen will serve as writers and executive producers on the show with Lettermen set to direct the first episode and Sony Pictures Television Studios producing.

Goosebumps reboot release date updates

We do not have any official timeframe for the series yet. Just Beyond came out in October 2021 and I imagine Disney Plus might want to time this series for an October release as well. We could see the new Goosebumps TV show as early as fall 2022.
