Walt Disney Pictures has announced that its new feature film Haunted Mansion will receive a release in theatres on March 10, 2023.

In 2003, the studio released The Haunted Mansion, starring Eddie Murphy as a realtor who gets trapped in a spooky mansion with his family. It was a fairly popular film, although fans of the Disney theme park ride have been clamoring for a reboot for years.

In the new version, Rosario Dawson will appear as a single mom named Gabbie. When she buys a mansion, she soon discovers it is haunted, and brings in a psychic (Tiffany Haddish), a priest (Owen Wilson), a tour guide (Lakeith Stanfield) and an historian (Danny DeVito) to exorcise her new digs.

With this being a Disney film, Haunted Mansion will probably not be an intense, scary movie, but since the theme park ride of the same name is so popular with fans of the genre, they will no doubt flock to see it when it releases.

Disney may have been testing the waters when they added Muppets Haunted Mansion to Disney+ in October of 2021, and it was popular with subscribers.

Disney’s Haunted Mansion has long been a favorite ride at Disneyland in California, Orlando’s Magic Kingdom and Tokyo Disneyland.

It’s been reported that Walt Disney had visited the famed Winchester Mystery House in California, and was so taken by its quirkiness (stairs and doors that open to nowhere and the like), that he used it as inspiration for the design of the mansion.

Imagineer Ken Anderson crafted the stories that are played out during the ride, including the phantom wedding party. The Disneyland Haunted Mansion made its debut in 1969, with Magic Kingdom’s opening in 1971. Tokyo Disneyland’s Haunted Mansion opened in 1983.

All feature the famed “Doom Buggies”, which lead visitors throughout the ghostly manor, ending with a cautionary warning to beware of hitchhiking ghosts. It remains to be seen whether the hitchhiking ghosts, or the spirited wedding guests will be included in the new film, but fans can certainly hope.
