Netflix is releasing a new series based on the best-selling survival horror video game of all time, Resident Evil, and you can watch it on the streaming platform beginning in July.

It’s not the first time Resident Evil has been adapted for the screen, of course; there is also the film franchise, which consists of six movies and a reboot, 2021’s Welcome to Raccoon City. In the first six films, we followed Alice (Milla Jovovich), as she battled the Umbrella Corporation, the company responsible for creating the bioweapons that caused a cataclysmic zombie event.

The films did stray a bit from their origin material (the main character of Alice was created for the movie), but they did include characters and plot points from the video games. The Resident Evil film series holds the record for most live-action film adaptations made from a video game.

Andrew Dabb (Supernatural), the Executive Producer/Writer/Showrunner for the new Netflix series promised to do justice to his favorite video game. He says the series will “be complete with a lot of old friends, and some things (bloodthirsty, insane things) people have never seen before.”

Set in the year 2036, 14 years after the spread of Joy, the series tells an all-new story in two very different parts. In the first, 14-year old twins Billie and Jade move to New Raccoon City, and soon begin to suspect the town (and their father) hold some horrifying secrets that could have world-ending results.

Netflix’s story is told in two timelines

The second timeline shows us a decade into the future, where the remaining healthy humans are greatly out-numbered by monsters. These monsters take the form of infected animals and humans both. The adult Jade is fighting her past while struggling to stay alive in this dangerous new world.

Ella Balinska, Tamara Smart, Siena Agudong and Lance Reddick star in the Resident Evil series, which will make its debut on Netflix Thursday, July 14.
