Syfy has already announced a new series titled Reginald the Vampire, along the return of the Chucky series. Now they are giving us a new take on the Bring It On film franchise with Bring It On: Cheer or Die.

Honestly, Syfy is probably the network that best understands how wonderful the mix of comedy and horror can be. And what better time of year is there to laugh-slash-scream than the Halloween season?

The first Bring It On film was released in 2000, and it had an above-average cast for what was basically just a comedy about high school cheerleaders. Kristin Dunst (Interview with the Vampire) starred as Torrance, the new team captain for the Toros cheerleading squad. When one of the cheerleaders is injured, Missy (Eliza Dushku, Buffy the Vampire Slayer) joins the team, even though she is kind of a “bad girl.” But she and Torrance become friends and work together when it turns out the prior team captain had been stealing routines from another school.

It’s a fun flick, elevated by a very smart, funny script, and admittedly, one of my favorite guilty pleasures. Bring It On achieved enough of a cult status to warrant six direct-to-video sequels, which included none of the original cast members.

Bring It On: Cheer or Die takes the film series into horror territory, and I’m here for it.

Kerri Medders and Tiera Skovbye are team co-captains Abby and McKayla, and they have been forbidden by their high school principal (Missi Pyle) from performing any “risky” cheerleading stunts. But the regional cheer competition is coming up, and playing it too safe will result in the Diablos being laughed off the performance floor.

The squad begins choreographing a daring top secret routine at an abandoned school, but things get scary when the cheerleaders begin to disappear one at a time. By the time they discover they are locked in the school with a killer, it might just be too late, and they must cheer or die to survive.

Bring It On: Cheer or Die makes its debut on Syfy  October 8 from 9:00-11:00 p.m.
