Summer is a little slow for horror movies but that doesn't mean there aren't some great watches on streaming. Horror/thrillers have been pretty popular this year with the success of Sinners and Companion. This list is dedicated to the other horror/thrillers that may have been swept under the rug over the years.

1. Presence (2024)

Presence flew under a lot of horror fans radar. The movie didn't earn much at the box office despite a decent Rotten Tomatoes score of 87%. I actually really enjoyed this movie even though the audience scores were low. If you're not a fan of slow burn horror then this isn't the movie for you.

Presence is a psychological thriller shot entirely from the point of view of the ghost. The ghost haunts a troubled family moving into a new home. The only person to acknowledge the presence is Chloe, who can't tell if it is trying to harm or help her.

Presence is available to watch on Hulu.

2. The Watchers (2024)

I'm not going to lie, The Watchers has me feeling conflicted. I really liked the concept of this movie involving folklore and the mystery behind the watchers. I wish the movie kept the mystery and didn't end the way it did, but I can appreciate the sum of its parts.

The Watchers is about a group of people that have wandered into the woods and into a random safe house. Every night they are being watched by something in the woods that will not allow them to leave. The only chance of survival is to try and navigate the dense forest before the sun goes down.

Watchers is available to watch on Max.

3. Don't Breathe (2016)

This movie is a little older than the rest on this list but is forgotten all the same. Despite its initial success and eventual sequel this horror/thriller is hardly ever mentioned. I remember really liking this movie when it first came out but I'm also guilty of letting it slip my mind.

Don't Breathe is a horror/crime/thriller that surprises you at every turn. A group of thieves are looking to make a big job on a retired veteran who also happens to be blind. Once they break in they quickly realize they have underestimated the old man and that he is also harboring a dark secret.

Don't Breathe is available to watch on Starz or Amazon Prime Video for $3.59

4. Watcher (2022)

This movie is not to be confused with The Watchers because I think Watcher is significantly better. Maika Monroe who is best known for her role in Longlegs, is the star of the movie so I was surprised to hear how unpopular this film was. The horror/thriller doesn't do anything too original but instead really sells the mystery and dreadful atmosphere.

Watcher is about an actress moving to Bucharest with her boyfriend. Feeling out of place she notices someone watching her and it just may be the serial killer plaguing the town.

Watcher is available to watch on Netflix and Tubi.

5. The Black Phone (2021)

The Black Phone is not necessarily underrated but I think it deserves more attention than it gets. The Black Phone received positive reviews and now has a sequel releasing later this year. The Black Phone is another horror/crime but also leans into the supernatural which makes it pretty unique.

The Black Phone follows the story of the Grabber, a serial killer who is picking off young boys. When Finney is taken, he is visited by the past victims and they try to give him clues to escape before it is too late.

The Black Phone is available to watch on Peacock.
