Trap (2024)

Now streaming on Max, Trap is the latest feature film from the master of twists himself, M. Night Shyamalan.

That said, he plays this one relatively straight. Josh Hartnett is impeccable as a menacing murderer/girl dad taking his daughter to a concert, unaware that the entire thing is a covert sting operation set up to arrest the elusive serial killer known as "The Butcher," otherwise known as Cooper (Hartnett).

Don't Breathe (2016)

Here's another movie with "don't" in the title featuring an extremely tense cat-and-mouse game of sorts. Directed by Fede Alvarez (Evil Dead, Alien: Romulus), Don't Breathe stars Jane Levy as a teenager stuck in a terrible living situation with her little sister. Problem is, she doesn't have the cash to afford an out.

Eager to escape, she enlists the assistance of some friends to break into the house of a seemingly easy target: a blind man (Stephen Lang). Little do they know that the man in question is perhaps the most formidable opponent they could have chosen and what ensues is one of the tensest and most effective thrillers of the past decade.

It's What's Inside

A mixture of science fiction, comedy, and horror, It's What's Inside is another new Netflix release that came out earlier this month after earning strong positive reviews at this year's Sundance Festival.

Taking place at a pre-wedding reunion gathering, a group of friends finds their lives flipped upside down when an old pal arrives with a mysterious suitcase in tow.

Alone (2020)

Another serial killer thriller set in the wilderness, Alone follows a recently widowed woman on her way to her new home when she's almost driven off the road by a crazed driver.

Later that night while at a motel, Jessica (Jules Wilcox) encounters the man once again and discovers he's a psychopath intent on killing her. And so begins a nail-biting cat-and-mouse sequence perfect for fans of Don't Move, but who perhaps wanted a little more action.

Hush (2016)

After a perilously long period in which fans could not watch this suspenseful home invasion film anywhere, that has finally been rectified by director Mike Flanagan thanks to collaborating with several different parties to bring this movie back into the public eye.

Not only did Hush recently receive a special physical release, but the film is also available to rent or purchase on VOD and now streaming on Shudder.

The Call (2020)

Another psychological serial killer-focused film with a sci-fi twist, The Call is a Korean film about two women, one in 2019 and the other 1999, who find themselves connected through a phone call while living in the same house two decades apart.

The Netflix logline is a succinct summation of the plot without giving too much away, describing how "a serial killer puts another woman's past—and life—on the line to change her own fate."
