Coming as a surprise to literally no one, a highly profitable 2024 movie is likely to get a sequel. We already knew the Alien franchise would be continuing with the planned FX series Alien: Earth set to release in 2025, but according to Fox exec Steve Asbell, we can expect another theatrical project sometime soon, too.
Talking to The Hollywood Reporter, Asbell revealed that they are in the process of developing a sequel idea, but they haven't inked a deal for Alien: Romulus director Fede Alvarez to return yet, though the exec sounds confident that it will happen.
That makes sense because Alvarez previously chatted with the same outlet and mentioned that he was tossing around ideas for a sequel, namely about Yvaga and whether it will be a positive place or the stuff of nightmares. Probably the latter.
Additionally, Abell mentions Cailee Spaeny and David Jonsson by name, crediting the two stars—who play Rain and Andy, respectively—for helping make the movie such a huge success. They just need to figure out where those characters will go next, meaning it's likely that they will be the focus of the next Alien film.
"We know there’s going to be aliens. We know there’s going to be great horror set pieces. But I fell in love with both of them and I want to see what their story is."
At the end of Alien: Romulus (SPOILERS!) we last saw Rain and Andy entering cryostasis on their ship bound for Yvaga after narrowly defeating the monstrous creature dubbed The Offspring. It seems likely that a follow-up film would see what happens when they finally arrive at their destination.
The Predator franchise is also still going strong, with the next movie Predator: Badlands starring Elle Fanning headed to theaters in 2025. Asbell also revealed that a second Predator movie will be released in 2025, but neglected to divulge any details about it yet.
With both franchises still going strong, is it possible we'll see another Alien vs. Predator movie in the future? Asbell says it's likely. He says if they were to make one, it would have to happen "organically," and they haven't yet "gotten to that point."
For now, fans can revisit Alien: Romulus at home. The movie is available to rent or buy on PVOD.
