Fede Alvarez is already toying around with ideas for an Alien: Romulus sequel

But the director isn't in a rush to get back to the series just yet.

Horror is at the top of its game this year and Alien: Romulus is just the latest in several big hits from 2024. The latest movie in the long-running sci-fi horror franchise opened to over $100 million during its first opening weekend at the worldwide box office, which is quite impressive.

Given the success, people are already curious about whether there is a future for Cailee Spaeny's character Rain Carradine and her android brother Andy (David Jonsson). Will Fede Alvarez return to helm another Alien?

During a recent interview with The Hollywood Reporter, the Uruguayan filmmaker revealed that he and his co-writer Rodo Sayagues have been juggling different ideas for a potential sequel. It sounds like they would focus on what happens when Rain ultimately makes it to the fabled Yvaga. Would it live up to the reputation she has been building up in her mind?

"What do you think happens when or if they get to Yvaga? Is it going to be great? Or is it a terrible place?” We tend to believe it’s probably a terrible place that they think is great and fantasize about, so we naturally started thinking about where it goes and what’s going to happen. And then, a few minutes in, we go, 'Oh, that sounds like a sequel.' "

Following the surviving characters to Yvaga makes the most sense for an organic follow-up to Alien: Romulus, but fans will probably have to wait several years for another Alien movie to come to fruition, if it ever does.

Alvarez told THR that he likes to distance himself from his projects for a bit before circling back to see if the audience genuinely wants a continuation, citing the seven-year gap between Alien and Aliens as an example of that.

Alvarez waited five years between Don't Breathe and Don't Breathe 2, another film he collaborated with Sayagues on. Alien is also getting another entry in 2025 with the planned Alien: Earth prequel television series on FX from Fargo showrunner Noah Hawley, so it might be wise to wait until that is released to see what direction the franchise is headed next.

Spoilers ahead for Alien: Romulus.

There are several interesting directions that a sequel film could go in, but probably the best would be to follow Rain and Andy to Yvaga where perhaps they discover that their troubles with the Xenomorphs aren't over. Maybe the Offspring isn't really dead or some egg sac got left behind on the ship. There are several dead bodies in there; who knows what else could be brewing inside?

But Alvarez's above quote seems to hint that it's Yvaga itself that will have problems. It might not be a sanctuary after all, but a colony harboring its own dark secrets.
