Spoilers from Yellowjackets season 3 ahead!

Lottie
Lottie was the first major character death this season, and it happens at the very end of the fourth episode. However, we don't find out all the details surrounding her death until the season 3 finale. In the fourth episode, we see Misty scrolling through the Bureau of Citizen Detectives website when she comes across a post revealing that a body has been found. Curious, she clicks on the post, and a photo pops up, displaying Lottie’s motionless body sprawled on the ground at the foot of a staircase, surrounded by candles arranged along the steps. Misty doesn't believe Lottie just fell down the stairs. She thinks someone murdered her, so she sets out to get to the bottom of her death.
In the Yellowjackets season 3 finale, Misty confronts Callie at her school after she finds a picture of her on Lottie's old phone. She accuses Callie of killing Lottie to which Callie denies. However, Callie finally cracks after Misty shares that she found her DNA under Lottie's fingernails. Initially, Misty thought it was Shauna's DNA, but when Shauna's alibi cleared, she knew it couldn't be her. However, that's when it hit her that mothers and daughters share the same mitochondrial DNA. That's how she realized the culprit was Callie. Callie then explains what happened.
As you may recall, Callie was in possession of the incriminating tape that Melissa had sent to rattle Shauna. But after Shauna kicked Lottie out of the house, the tape mysteriously vanished. Suspecting that Lottie had taken it, Callie set out to confront her and eventually tracked her down at her father’s place. Lottie led her to the building’s basement, where the stairwell was eerily lit with candles. There, she admitted to taking the tape, but insisted it wasn’t what really mattered. She tells Callie that the true significance of the tape was that it led her to her.
Already unsettled, Callie grows increasingly disturbed when Lottie proclaims she’s the child of the wilderness. Feeling the need to get out, Callie turns to leave, only for Lottie to grab her by the arm. Lottie then delivers further unsettling remarks about Callie’s relationship with Shauna, insisting that Shauna can never truly love her because of jealousy. These words strike a raw nerve in Callie, and in a fit of anger, she shoves Lottie down the stairs, inadvertently causing her death.

Coach Ben Scott
Coach Ben spends the first half of the third season in hiding because he knows the girls suspect him of burning down their cabin. However, they eventually capture him in the cave and take him back to their compound, where they put him on trial. He's ultimately found guilty, and the group begins debating what his punishment should be. Most are in favor of executing him until Akilah has a vision that changes everything.
In it, she sees Coach Ben as a symbolic bridge, which she interprets as a sign that he holds the key to leading them out of the wilderness and back to civilization. She explains the vision to the others, and they let Coach Ben live. But Coach Ben has reached his limit. He’s mentally out of it and emotionally drained, barely holding onto reality. He begs for Natalie to put him out of his misery, but she refuses to do so at first. She eventually gives in and fatally stabs him in the heart with a knife in the sixth episode.

Van
Van’s death completely blindsided me. While I knew it was a possibility given her worsening cancer, I never expected her to die at someone else’s hands instead of from the illness. This shocking turn of events unfolds in the ninth episode of Yellowjackets season 3. After Melissa shuts the fireplace flue, trapping everyone inside with smoke, Van rushes to rescue Taissa and Shauna. She gets them both outside but returns to the house, determined to kill Melissa. Just as she’s about to stab her, Van hesitates, and in that moment, Melissa seizes the knife and fatally stabs her in the chest.

Mari
Guess who Pit Girl really is? It’s Mari! In the Yellowjackets season 3 finale, she’s revealed to be the mysterious Pit Girl, though I’m sure many fans had already suspected it. After all the animals in their compound are found dead, Lottie insists that it’s a sign the wilderness is angry with them. She believes they must offer another sacrifice to make it happy. This leads the survivors to put together another hunt, hoping to satisfy the wilderness’s demands.
With Van being in charge of dealing the cards that will determine who becomes the sacrifice, she makes sure to rig the game in her and Tai's favor. Tai convinced her to manipulate the cards, ensuring that they remain safe. However, they still need to decide who will receive the Queen of Hearts card, as that person will be chosen as the sacrifice. They eventually chose someone, and the game begins the next morning. Each survivor pulls a card, but no one pulls the Queen of Hearts. Then, only Shauna and Mari are left. At this moment, Shauna realizes something fishy is going on. She figures out that Van and Tai rigged the game, and that she was supposed to be the one to draw the Queen of Hearts.
Realizing the danger she's in, Shauna quickly shifts her position and stands next to Tai to avoid drawing the card. She ends up pulling a different card, one that keeps her safe. However, that leaves Mari pulling the Queen of Hearts. She's marked the sacrifice, and Jackie's old necklace is placed around her neck. The girls give her a brief head start before they begin chasing her through the woods. During her flight, Mari encounters Lottie, and they share a short conversation before Mari resumes running, only to accidentally fall into a spiked pit. The pit was hidden by snow, so there was no way Mari could've known to avoid it. That's how Mari meets her tragic end.
Here are three other characters who meet a tragic end in Yellowjackets season 3:
- Ethan Pines (waiter) - He dies in the first episode from a fatal heart attack after running after Taissa and Van, who had dined and dashed at his restaurant.
- Edwin (frog scientist) - Lottie kills him by swinging an axe into the back of his head in episode 7.
- Kodiak (wilderness guide) - Hannah fatally stabs him in the eye with a knife in episode 9.
