Back in October 2024, a new American Psycho movie was announced to be in the works with Luca Guadagnino (Queer, Challengers) set to direct the film for Lionsgate. Now, we've just learned that Golden Globe Award-winning actor Austin Butler has joined the cast in the leading role of Patrick Bateman.

Euphoria star Jacob Elordi was rumored to have been in the running for the iconic role, but the casting ultimately didn’t happen. Monsters: The Lyle and Erik Menendez Story actor Cooper Koch had also expressed interest in portraying Patrick Bateman. However, Butler has now been confirmed to play the notorious serial killer character. He's best known for starring as Elvis Presley in Elvis (2022). He also had roles in the movies The Bikeriders and Dune: Part Two and a role in the war drama miniseries Masters of the Air.

Guadagnino's new American Psycho film adaptation will not be a remake of the 2000 movie of the same name. It will be a new interpretation of the horror novel of the same title by Bret Easton Ellis. Scott Z. Burns (Extrapolations) wrote the script. Additionally, Frenesy Films will produce, and Sam Pressman will executive produce the movie through Pressman Film.

Unfortunately, Butler is the only actor that has been cast so far, and plot details are being kept under wraps. Bret Easton Ellis' 1991 novel told the story of a successful Manhattan investment banker named Patrick Bateman who secretly harbors violent and depraved urges. Most people know him as a young and handsome investment banker, but he is actually living a double life as a serial killer.

Will Guadagnino's movie follow the book? While we don't know how much of the novel will be covered in the film, we could see this new adaptation switching some things up to make it fresh. Once we know the plot, we'll inform you right away. But for now, this is all we know about the horror film.
