Blumhouse will release its latest horror movie this week, Drop, which also happens to be the company's best-reviewed title of the year (so far), with an even 90% approval score on Rotten Tomatoes at the time of writing this article. The American production company founded by Jason Blum and Amy Israel is known primarily for making horror movies, including franchises like Insidious, The Purge, and Happy Death Day.
This year, the company has already released two movies, Wolf Man and The Woman in the Yard, both received a mixed reception from critics and audiences. Drop will be a chance for Blumhouse to get back on track ahead of some of its other big releases coming later, such as M3GAN 2.0, Five Nights at Freddy's 2, and The Black Phone 2.
Happy Death Day director and writer Christopher Landon directed Drop, while Jillian Jacobs and Chris Roach co-wrote the script. Landon is well-known for his genre mash-ups. Apart from Happy Death Day, he also wrote and directed Freaky, starring Kathryn Newton, and he penned the script for Sony's acclaimed rom-com slasher Heart Eyes, also released this year.
His latest venture is a thriller starring The White Lotus actress Meghann Fahy as widowed mom Violet, who has just begun dating again. Violet hits it off with a charming man named Henry (Brandon Sklenar) and has a surprisingly excellent first date, but that's when things take a turn for the worse. Not long after meeting Henry, a stranger begins sending her anonymous messages threatening to murder her son and her sister if Violet doesn't kill Henry. The film's name is inspired by Apple's AirDrop system, allowing users to share photos and other media between nearby Apple devices.
Violett Beane, Jacob Robinson, Reed Diamond, Ed Weeks, Ben Pelletier, Gabrielle Ryan, Travis Nelson, and Jeffrey Self also star.
Landon's sleek and stylized direction has translated well to the straightforward thriller genre. Critics are praising the film for its momentum and suspenseful cat-and-mouse tension, favorably comparing it to the works of Alfred Hitchcock.
Bloody Disgusting called Drop an "infectious tribute to Wes Craven's Red Eye," and IGN Movies praised it as an "unpretentious thrill ride."
