We're not quite done learning Dexter Morgan's origin story just yet. Paramount+ with Showtime has officially renewed Dexter: Original Sin for a second installment. This good news comes a little over a month after the hit crime drama premiered its last episode of its first season. The writers' room is expected to begin work soon on the second season, with production details to be announced at a later date.
Dexter: Original Sin is the third installment in the Dexter franchise, following Dexter and Dexter: New Blood. Serving as a prequel, it takes place 15 years before the events of the original series. Set in 1991 Miami, the show follows a young Dexter Morgan in his late teens as he evolves into a vigilante serial killer, all while working as a forensics intern at the Miami Metro Police Department.
Patrick Gibson takes on the lead role of serial killer in training, Dexter Morgan. Michael C. Hall, who played the adult Dexter Morgan in the original series, is the show's narrator. The season 1 cast also includes Christian Slater, Molly Brown, Christina Milian, James Martinez, Alex Shimizu, Reno Wilson, Sarah Michelle Gellar, and Patrick Dempsey.
Clyde Phillips, the creator of the crime drama series, serves as both showrunner and executive producer. He will return to lead the second season. At this time, however, no casting or plot details have been revealed for Dexter: Original Sin season 2. It’s expected that Gibson will reprise his role as the titular character for the upcoming season. As more information becomes available, fans can expect further updates on what’s to come.
In the meantime, fans can look forward to the release of another show in the Dexter franchise. It's the upcoming crime drama series Dexter: Resurrection, which is a sequel series to Dexter: New Blood. It's slated to be released on Paramount+ with Showtime this summer, with Hall returning to play an adult Dexter. Uma Thurman, David Zayas, Jack Alcott, Ntare Guma Mbaho Mwine, Kadia Saraf, Dominic Fumusa, Emilia Suárez, James Remar, Peter Dinklage, and many others make up the cast as well. Another prequel spinoff series is also in development at Paramount+ with Showtime. It'll explore the origins of the infamous serial killer, The Trinity Killer, who John Lithgow played in the original series.
