Hulu doesn’t play when it comes to true crime and thrillers, and the streaming service is adding a couple of great selections at the end of September. The complete Huluween schedule is yet to come, so we can expect a great October on Hulu as well.
The Man in My Basement premieres on Hulu September 26. Described as a psychological thriller, The Man in My Basement stars Corey Hawkins (The Last Voyage of the Demeter), Willem Dafoe (Poor Things), Anna Diop (Us), Gershwyn Eustache Jnr (Silent Witness), Jonathan Ajayi (Alien: Earth), Pamela Nomvete (Love, Death and Robots) and Tamara Lawrance (The Silent Twins).
In The Man in My Basement, Charles Blakey (Hawkins) is going through a tough time in his African American neighborhood in Sag Harbor. He lost his job and is facing foreclosure on his family home.
That’s when a businessman named Anniston Bennet (Dafoe) shows up with an interesting proposition; if Charles will agree to rent out his basement for the summer, Bennet says he will get more than enough money to get himself out of debt.
But Charles soon find himself “led down a terrifying path that confronts his family’s ghosts and locks the men in a terrifying puzzle, at the heart of it race, the source of their traumas and the root of all evil.”
The Man in My Basement is directed by Nadia Latif (Culprits).
The new true crime docuseries coming to Hulu is called Death in Apartment 603: What Happened to Ellen Greenberg?
On January 26, 2011, Philadelphia was hit with a blizzard that led to the local schools closing early. First grade teacher Ellen Greenberg left the school she was working at and returned home to her apartment. That evening, her fiancé Samuel Goldberg came back to the apartment after visiting the gym, and found the door was locked from the inside with a swing latch. He eventually managed to bust the door open, and Ellen’s body was found inside. When Goldberg called 911, he stated that Ellen had stabbed herself, and had “fallen on a knife.”
Her death was ruled a suicide, which at first glance wouldn’t really seem odd to anyone who didn’t know the facts. It would be discovered that she had 20 stab wounds to her neck and back, and there were 11 bruises on her body. Suicide? Really?
Even though the Medical Examiner’s Office decided after the autopsy that she died as a result of homicide, Philadelphia PD continued to assert that it was suicide. A month later, the Medical Examiner agreed, and the case was closed.
There are a lot of very odd circumstances surrounding Ellen’s death and the investigation into it, and her parents have persisted in re-opening the case. Death in Apartment 603 follows them as they try to get to the bottom of their daughter’s death and seek justice for her.
