The upcoming issue of Empire Magazine features an in-depth interview with Alien: Romulus director Fede Álvarez, who has also directed other acclaimed horror films like the 2013 Evil Dead remake and Don't Breathe.

Empire released a snippet of the forthcoming piece, in which the filmmaker discusses his sequel plans for Alien: Romulus. But don't get too excited just yet. The director was clear that he doesn't want to make another movie just "because [they] can." He wants to ensure that they have a solid idea of where to go next, and do something really "unexpected."

“Rodo [Sayagues, co-writer] and I are working on that right now. We’re excited about where it can go. We’ve almost checked all of the boxes of things that I want to see [in Romulus], and brought back a lot of the things I hadn’t seen in a while. Wherever we go now, we can go into uncharted waters," Álvarez told the outlet.

Expect Cailee Spaeny to return as the first film's protagonist Rain. As 1428 Elm previously reported, there are rumors that Spaeny is already in talks to return for a sequel, along with David Jonsson as her synthetic brother Andy.

Fox executive Steve Asbell seemed very excited about what the future holds for the Alien franchise, casually mentioning that he wouldn't even be surprised if another Alien v Predator movie could be in the cards someday if it happens naturally. And Álvarez previously mentioned that he and Sayagues were considering ideas for a sequel. It will likely follow the further adventures of Rain and Andy as they finally make it to Yvaga and find out if their new home is everything they hoped for.

As one of 2024's most successful horror movies and part of a beloved science fiction franchise, there are a lot of expectations riding on a potential follow-up film. The sci-fi horror film functions as a direct sequel to the original Ridley Scott-directed masterpiece, taking place about 20 years after the events of the first film but before Aliens. The film wound up making more than $350 million at the global box office.

This year, fans will get to see the Xenomorphs in a new location: Earth. Noah Hawley's FX series is set to premiere this summer and will be set about two years before Alien. A sequel to the popular survival horror video game Alien: Isolation is also in the works off of the popularity of Alien: Romulus.

For those who haven't checked out the new Alien movie yet, it's currently available to stream on Hulu and through digital retailers. It's also available to purchase physically on 4K UHD, Blu-ray, and DVD.
