This week's biggest release is the second season of the Disney+ series Goosebumps. Since it is an anthology show, you don't need to have watched season 1 to jump in on season 2, subtitled "The Vanishing." David Schwimmer stars as the father of twins who learn their dad was one of four teens to disappear in 1994. Ana Ortiz also stars.
Shudder subscribers can finally watch Nick Frost's new horror-comedy film Get Away when it starts streaming on Friday, and an acclaimed, festival-winning Australian horror movie comes to theaters this week. George A. Romero's Resident Evil (VOD, Jan. 7)
Brandon Salisbury writes and directs this fascinating and in-depth documentary about the George A. Romero Resident Evil movie that never was. The director even went as far as writing a first draft for his version of the film but Capcom reportedly rejected it. They would later move ahead with the Paul W.S. Anderson written and directed film that was released in 2002 and launched a film franchise. The documentary will include interviews with key figures associated with the project, archival footage, and much more.
Get Away (Shudder, Jan. 10)
Nick Frost stars in this British comedic folk horror film Get Away will finally be available to watch at home this week when it begins streaming on Shudder and AMC+. A family is prepared to venture to a beautiful Swedish island for a fun vacation, unaware that a serial killer is currently roaming the same location. In addition to starring, Frost also wrote the script, while Steffen Haars directed. Sebastian Croft and Aisling Bea also star.
Birdeater (VOD, Jan. 10)
One of the buzziest new releases of January, Birdeater won the award for Best Australian Narrative Feature at last year's Sydney Film Festival. The movie will finally be distributed in theaters in the United States via Dark Sky Films starting this week. Dubbed a "feral" nightmare, Birdeater follows a woman to her fiancé's bachelor party in the remote Australian outback. Things quickly descend into chaos as dark secrets about their relationship come to light. Also playing in select theaters.
Survive (VOD, Jan. 10)
This French survival thriller follows a family celebrating a birthday on a boat in the middle of the ocean when a sudden storm capsizes them and leaves them stranded in a deserted land. Survive reveals that Earth's polarity has reversed, causing all of the water to drain from the oceans and this family are stuck on land at the mercy of countless underwater creatures (like angry crabs) now scouring the area for food. Survive will also be playing in select theaters.
Goosebumps: The Vanishing (Disney+, Jan. 10)
Twins Cece and Devin Brewer are excited to spend all summer with their recently divorced father (David Schwimmer) in Brooklyn. He only has one rule for them: Don't go into the basement. We learn that Mr. Brewer was one of several teenagers to disappear in 1994 and it seems like he's still obsessed with finding out what happened. Cece, Devin, and their friends become wrapped up in the mystery and some of them even suspect that the twins' father could have a more sinister connection to everything. All eight episodes will start streaming simultaneously on Disney+ and Hulu.
