One of this year's most eagerly awaited horror films is Sony's adaptation of Until Dawn, and the film distributor has just unveiled the first teaser for the upcoming movie. Of course, we shared it below, along with all the key details you need to know about the film.
If you're a hardcore video gamer, this movie is likely already on your radar. Produced by Screen Gems and PlayStation Productions, it’s a live-action spinoff of the wildly popular interactive horror game of the same name from Supermassive Games. Directed by David F. Sandberg (Annabelle: Creation, Lights Out) and written by Gary Dauberman (Annabelle Comes Home, It Chapter Two), this adaptation brings the game’s chilling world to life.
However, there are some notable differences between the game and its movie adaptation, especially in terms of the story. First, it's not considered a direct adaptation. While the game focuses on a group of friends at a secluded mountain lodge being hunted by a mysterious killer, the upcoming movie takes a different narrative approach. It's set in the same universe as the video game but tells a new story and features new elements.
Watch the teaser below, which includes interviews with the director, screenwriter, and one of the cast members, as well as footage from the film!
As mentioned by Sandberg in the teaser, the Until Dawn movie will have the "same tone" and "same vibe" as the 2015 video game but will expand on the universe. The story will center around a young woman and her friends who decide to visit the place where her sister went missing a year prior for answers. However, while exploring, they find themselves the new targets of a masked killer who begins picking them off one by one. But the movie doesn't end there.
After each murder, the friend group awakens to find themselves back at the beginning of the same night, forced to relive the horror repeatedly. With no apparent way out, they must fight to survive until dawn.
Here's the movie's official synopsis via Sony Pictures Releasing:
"One year after her sister Melanie mysteriously disappeared, Clover and her friends head into the remote valley where she vanished in search of answers. Exploring an abandoned visitor center, they find themselves stalked by a masked killer and horrifically murdered one by one…only to wake up and find themselves back at the beginning of the same evening. Trapped in the valley, they’re forced to relive the nightmare again and again – only each time the killer threat is different, each more terrifying than the last. Hope dwindling, the group soon realizes they have a limited number of deaths left, and the only way to escape is to survive until dawn."
The cast is made up of a bunch of actors you'll most likely recognize, like Ella Rubin (Anora, The Girl from Plainville), Michael Cimino (Girl Haunts Boy, Annabelle Comes Home), Ji-young Yoo (Sweet Home), Odessa A'zion (Hellraiser, Grand Army), Maia Mitchell (Good Trouble, The Artful Dodger), and Belmont Cameli (Based on a True Story, Saved by the Bell). Peter Stormare, who voiced Dr. Alan J. Hill in the Until Dawn video game, reprises this iconic role in the film.
Sony has already announced a theatrical release date for the Until Dawn movie. The horror film is scheduled to hit U.S. theaters on Friday, April 25, 2025. Currently, there are two major horror releases in April: Until Dawn and Sinners. Since Sinners is set to release before Until Dawn, you won’t have to choose between the two. However, we strongly recommend seeing them both. I don't know if you saw the trailer for Sinners yet, but it looks like it's going to be an entertaining watch as well!
