Until Dawn (Theaters, Apr. 25)

  • Director: David F. Sandberg
  • Writers: Gary Dauberman and Blair Butler
  • Cast: Ella Rubin, Michael Cimino, Odessa A'zion, Ji-young Yoo, Belmont Cameli, Maia Mitchell, and Peter Stormare

The highly anticipated movie adaptation of the popular video game Until Dawn finally arrives in theaters this weekend. Gamers have mixed feelings about this adaptation, as it doesn't actually follow the story from the game, instead opting to utilize more meta elements to create a unique setup that forces the characters to die over and over again in a myriad of different ways. It's more like The Cabin in the Woods, but it does embrace the game's "choice" system. Early reviews have been positive.

Jason Hochberg is a 24-year-old camp counselor who has remained a devoted participant at Camp Pineway, though he struggles to connect with the younger teenage counselors. A summer camp slasher movie, Jason's summer vacation takes a sharp turn into darkness when a killer starts picking off the counselors. This movie marks the feature directorial debut of Stranger Things star Finn Wolfhard and Billy Bryk. If you haven't seen it in theaters, you can watch it at home this week.

Ash is one of this year's highest-reviewed horror movies and will eventually come to Shudder. But for now, you can check out Ash on VOD starting on Tuesday, April 22. Eiza González has received significant praise for her leading role as Riya, an astronaut who wakes up on a distant planet to discover that all of her crewmates have been violently slaughtered, with just one man (Aaron Paul) claiming to be her only salvation.

Locked (VOD, Apr. 22)

  • Director: David Yarovesky
  • Writer: Michael Arlen Ross
  • Cast: Bill Skarsgård and Anthony Hopkins

Bill Skarsgård and Anthony Hopkins face off in this tense thriller that arrives on demand on Tuesday. It had a brief theatrical window, but I'm guessing many people missed this one in cinemas. Skarsgård plays a carjacker who finds himself way over his head when he tries to rob the wrong person. He soon finds himself trapped inside a rigged vehicle owned by a sociopath (Hopkins).

The Killgrin (VOD, Apr. 25)

  • Director/Writer: Joanna Tsanis
  • Cast: Konstantina Mantelos, Adam Tsekhman, and Cristo Fernández

The latest indie horror movie from Dark Sky Films follows a struggling woman named Miranda, who uses some unusual self-help methods. She learns something has infected her aura, a mysterious entity known as the "killgrin" that thrives on misery.

Frewaka
Frewaka | Shudder

Fréwaka (Shudder, Apr. 25)

  • Director/Writer: Aislinn Clarke
  • Cast: Clare Monnelly, Bríd Ní Neachtain, and Aleksandra Bystrzhitskaya

Shudder nabbed the streaming rights (in North America, the UK, Irish, Australia, and New Zealand) to this Irish-language horror movie. Aislinn Clarke wrote and directed the folk horror movie, which follows a home care worker assigned to care for an agoraphobe. She fears leaving her house because of sinister entities known as the Na Sídhe, who she believes once kidnapped her many years before.
