Wednesday is Netflix's supernatural teen drama take on the Addams Family, led by a perfectly cast Jenna Ortega in the titular role. The first season became a massive success for the streaming service, quickly becoming one of the most-streamed English-language Netflix Originals of all time.
The season 2 renewal news wasn't a surprise, but it has been a painfully long wait for new episodes. Thankfully, the wait will be coming to an end later this year, and we've been getting plenty of teases about what to expect from season 2.
The Tim Burton-directed first season was a great introduction to the world of Nevermore Academy and its supernaturally gifted students. But it was lacking a little on the horror front. Even though the central plot revolved around Wednesday and her friends solving a murder mystery, fans of the original Addams Family series and movies expected more creepy and kooky content.
An episode devoted to slashers
Based on everything we've heard about the sophomore season, the show will soon deliver all that and more. Ortega previously chatted with Collider about what fans can expect from season 2, noting that it will be much darker.
The actress said there will be several "bizarre" moments in season 2, including many horror movie references and "a whole episode based off of slashers."
Considering Ortega has starred in her fair share of horror movies, such as X and Scream, she knows what she's talking about when it comes to this genre. We can expect references to iconic films like Carrie, Prom Night, and more.
Showrunners Miles Millar and Al Gough echoed Ortega's statements, noting that the second season will delve deeper into Wednesday's journey, which will be "darker and more complex."
One of the most divisive elements of the first season was the inclusion of a love triangle for Wednesday, something that never really felt fitting for the character. Ortega agreed and said that the second season is leaning into the horror and "ditching any romantic love interest for Wednesday."
The trope-y clichés revolving around Wednesday's romances with Tyler (Hunter Doolan) and Xavier (Percy White Jackson) were among the weakest moments of season 1. Knowing that season 2 is more self-assured and confident in its storytelling and moving in a darker direction sounds like the right way for the series to develop in the future and hopefully continue for many more seasons.
We still don't know when Wednesday season 2 will premiere, but another exciting detail is that Lady Gaga will have a small role to play! Stay tuned to 1428 Elm for more information about the series and when it will return.
