ID (Investigation Discovery) is premiering another new true crime docuseries in November. The Rocky Mountain Mortician Murder consists of three episodes regarding the murder of Byron Griffy in Colorado.

Described by ID as a “shocking case that rocked a small, close-knit Colorado community to its core”, the case included elaborate cover-ups, con games, secret lovers, and – of course – murder.

Byron Griffy was found dead on his ranch in a remote area of rural Colorado in October of 2012. At the time, he was a well-respected man in the community, seemingly a family man. He had been shot in the head execution-style. At first, law enforcement believed it to be the result of a robbery, but a more thorough investigation uncovered some shocking and unexpected facts.

ID series The Rocky Mountain Mortician Murder will also be available to stream on HBO Max

The series will premiere on Wednesday, November 26 from 8:00 pm – 11:00 pm ET on ID. Viewers will hear the story of Byron Griffy’s murder and what the ensuing investigation uncovered. There will also be interviews with townspeople in the area where Griffy was killed, along with commentary from law enforcement and other key players in the twisted, dark story.

Griffy’s body was discovered in his home by his daughter-in-law Gina, who said she thought at first that he had fallen and fatally injured himself. Instead, an autopsy discovered a small caliber bullet was the cause of death, and it had gone through the back of his head, ending up lodged in his jaw.  The Forensic Pathologist who completed the autopsy said the bullet had been fired from approximately six inches from his head, and he had probably died within minutes.

No weapons were discovered at the murder scene, but investigators did find over $10,000 in cash throughout the home in bank bags and in various safes. That is most likely the reason robbery was at first believed to be the motive for the murder.

But Griffy had a frightening past history as a convicted sex offender. Five months earlier, he had pled guilty to sexual assault by a person in a position of trust. The case involved  a 15-year-old boy, who said he had been assaulted by Griffy during the two years he worked at his Funeral Home.

Griffy had been sentenced to probation for four years, and was required to complete 150 hours of community service. There is a lot more to Griffy’s story, but I will leave you to discover it by watching The Rocky Mountain Mortician Murder.
