1997’s surprise hit movie Anaconda is getting an interesting homage this year; and no, it’s not a remake…although it is ABOUT a remake. I know, that description is a little confusing, so let’s break down the info on Sony’s upcoming December release.

The original Anaconda is described as an action-adventure-horror film, and it’s about a film crew who are in the Amazon to shoot a documentary about an Amazonian tribe called the Shirishamas. While navigating the area, the crew meets a snake hunter, who assures them that he is definitely the one who can help them find the Shirishamas.

As they soon discover, the hunter is actually using them to help him hunt down the super gigantic anaconda snake he is obsessed with finding. Soon, all hell breaks loose as the film crew and the snake hunter battles not one, but several anacondas – including the super gigantic one.

With a very trendy 90s cast, including Jennifer Lopez, Ice Cube, Eric Stoltz, Owen Wilson, Danny Trjo and Jon Voight, Anaconda did not get such great reviews, but it did make a lot of money at the box office, making $16.6 million on its opening weekend. In all, the film grossed $136.8 million in its initial theatrical run. It’s gone on to become a cult favorite, spawning one theatrical release sequel and three television sequels (including a Lake Placid crossover sequel).

All of this brings us to the current Anaconda-related news. With the slogan “Big stakes. Bigger snakes”, the new film stars Jack Black and Paul Rudd as Doug and Griff, two lifelong besties who have always shared a love for the original Anaconda film.

The two finally get the chance to follow their long-standing dream of filming a remake, they head straight to the Amazon to begin filming. But instead of a fun filming experience, they end up encountering a very real gigantic anaconda that could very well kill them.

Anaconda will open in theaters on December 25, 2025

The cast for Anaconda also includes Steve Zahn (The Righteous Gemstones), Thandiwe Newton (Wednesday), Daniela Melchior (The Suicide Squad) and Selton Mello (Bury Your Dead). You can watch the new trailer below.
