Jason Bateman and Taron Egerton square off in holiday thriller Carry-On
By Mads Lennon
This holiday season, Jason Bateman is invading an airport and trying to perpetrate mass murder. The only person who can stop him is a TSA agent, played by Taron Egerton, who wants nothing more than to get through the day and spend quality time with his girlfriend (Sofia Carson).
Carry-On is an upcoming Netflix thriller with a newly released trailer arriving on the streaming service this December. From The Shallows director Jaume Collet-Serra, Carry-On looks like a tense thriller akin to Die Hard and the 2002 film Phone Booth starring Colin Farrell. T.J. Fixman, best known for his work on the Ratchet & Clank video game franchise, writes the script for Carry-On.
The trailer teases Egerton's character, Ethan, attempting to do whatever it takes to outmaneuver Bateman's cool and calculating role, intent on getting a mysterious piece of luggage through the security checkpoint untouched. As one might expect from a villain intent on murdering a whole lot of people, the domestic terrorist is happy to threaten Ethan's girlfriend and all of the other innocent people populating the airport.
Chatting with Tudum, Egerton revealed that he and director Collet-Serra collaborated to ensure Ethan would "feel as relatable and as normal as possible." The idea is for Ethan to feel like a regular, low-level security agent thrust into an "extraordinary" and terrifying situation.
Carry-On looks like a slick and impressive thriller with exciting action sequences and ample suspense. Given Egerton's background in the Kingsman franchise, we know he's more than up to the task, and Bateman excels at playing these types of unnerving characters. It's also the first official collaboration between Netflix and Steven Spielberg's production company Amblin Partners.
Even aside from the two leading actors, the cast is impressive, featuring Danielle Deadwyler, Logan Marshall-Green, Sinqua Walls, and Dean Norris. Gil Perez-Abraham, Tonatiuh, Curtiss Cook, Joe Williamson, and Josh Brener also star.
Carry-On makes its global debut on Netflix on December 13. While you wait, check out these other psychological thrillers on Netflix.
