Lionsgate adapting one of the scariest survival horror games ever into a film
By Mads Lennon
Until Dawn is getting a movie adaptation, Blumhouse is reportedly working on a Dead by Daylight film, and now Bloody Disgusting exclusively reports that Lionsgate—the studio behind the long-running Saw franchise—is planning on terrifying a whole new audience with a movie version of Outlast.
According to the outlet, horror film producer Roy Lee, who has produced titles like Barbarian and this year's Late Night with the Devil, will "lead the adaptation." Original Outlast writer J.T. Petty will work on the screenplay.
"Red Barrels has been pushing the limits of horror in games for more than a decade, and expanding the 'Outlast Universe' into film is an incredible opportunity to dive deeper into the characters and killers we love."
- Roy Lee
A survival horror game, Outlast puts players in the role of a journalist who receives a tip regarding a creepy old psychiatric hospital in Colorado. Once inside, he uncovers an absolute nightmare. Red Barrels developed and published the game, which proved successful enough to warrant multiple follow-ups.
The most recent is The Outlast Trials, a prequel to the first two games in the series that follows the aftermath of Cold War-era experiments. While The Outlast Trials can be played single-player like previous installments, it also features co-op.
It's a good time to be a horror fan, especially one who enjoys playing games in addition to watching movies. As mentioned above, Until Dawn is also getting a film adaptation, currently on track for an April 2025 release and Sony recently released a remake of the game for PlayStation 5 earlier this month.
As for Dead by Daylight, the film in development is part of the latest team-up between James Wan's production company Atomic Monster and Blumhouse. Dead by Daylight is a massively popular online multiplayer game with millions of players.
Besides the planned Outlast movie, Lionsgate will also be releasing the next movie in the Saw franchise, Saw XI in September 2025, and the studio still has two more films in the updated The Strangers trilogy to release, with a recent teaser released for The Strangers: Chapter Two.
