Maika Monroe, best known for her standout roles in modern horror hits like It Follows and Longlegs, is officially stepping in to lead the upcoming period horror thriller Victorian Psycho, following Margaret Qualley's unexpected exit from the project. In another surprising twist, A24, which previously agreed to handle the film’s domestic distribution, has reportedly dropped out of the project as well. Originally announced in October 2024, Victorian Psycho is an upcoming horror film adapted from Virginia Feito’s bestselling novel of the same name. The book was released in January 2025. Set in 1858, the movie follows Winifred Notty, a young governess who takes up residence at the remote and foreboding Ensor House. Entrusted with instilling proper etiquette in the children and teaching them about their ancestral legacy, Winifred carefully conceals her deeply disturbed nature. However, as she settles into her new role, a string of unexplained staff disappearances begins to occur, prompting the household’s owners to grow wary and suspect that she has something to do with it.
Zachary Wigon is set to direct, with Feito herself penning the screenplay. At the time of the movie's announcement, The Substance star Margaret Qualley was attached to play the lead role of Winifred Notty, with filming scheduled to begin in March 2025. In November 2024, Last Night in Soho actress Thomasin McKenzie joined the cast as a nursemaid who forms a bond with Winifred. Then, in December 2024, we learned that A24 had bought the domestic rights to the film.
Now, much has changed. According to Deadline, Qualley is no longer attached to the project, having exited the film several months ago for undisclosed reasons. A24 also departed the movie shortly after Qualley’s exit, though no explanation has been provided for the company's withdrawal. Despite these shake-ups, the film remains on track, with Maika Monroe now set to take over Qualley's role as Winifred. Production has also been slightly delayed, but is reportedly looking to start soon in August of this year.
Besides Victorian Psycho, Monroe is working on several other horror projects. She's also confirmed to star in a The Hand That Rocks the Cradle remake, an It Follows sequel and a horror film called Brides. That said, horror fans definitely have plenty to look forward to from her in the coming years!
