Dexter: Original Sin is taking a mini-hiatus this week, with new episodes returning on January 24, but Showtime didn't want to let Dexter fans go without any news about our beloved avenging serial killer. The official Instagram page for Showtime's Dexter shared a video message from Michael C. Hall himself announcing that the upcoming sequel series, Dexter: Resurrection, has started production!
Hall says he's excited to embark on "another thrill ride" with us as they kick off the first day on set. Resurrection will reportedly air later this year, likely in the fall or winter. It is a follow-up to the previous revival series Dexter: New Blood, which ended with Dexter's secret being exposed and his death at the hands of his son, Harrison.
How can Hall be back as Dexter if Dexter is dead? Well, that was established in the opening scene of the prequel series Original Sin, showing the Bay Harbor Butcher survived his encounter, albeit barely. The prequel series is structured as Dexter reliving all his memories in his final moments as his life flashes before his eyes, explaining why, although Patrick Gibson plays young Dexter, Hall is still around to narrate his inner monologue.
In short, it sounds like Resurrection will see Dexter return in all of his murderous glory, but now that the secret of his identity has been exposed, we'll see Dexter in a much different light. He's now a proper fugitive and has no allies left (that we know of, anyway). It's hard to imagine he can simply move to a new place and change his identity like he's done in the past now that the truth of his serial killer past is out there. Showtime hasn't shared any plot details for Resurrection yet, but it'll be interesting to see if Harrison returns or if Dexter perhaps tries to find his son.
Many Dexter veterans are returning for Resurrection, including series original showrunner Clyde Phillips, who has been the showrunner for all of the Dexter series so far.
Between Resurrection and Original Sin, Dexter fans have plenty of content to look forward to. Four episodes remain of the prequel and it seems likely that Showtime/Paramount will renew the series for another season. Plus, a fourth Dexter spinoff series is in development. This one will reportedly focus on John Lithgow's sinister character Arthur Mitchell, a.k.a. the Trinity Killer. Lithgow would return to narrate the story like Hall did for Original Sin.
Stay tuned to 1428 Elm for all things Dexter. All episodes of Original Sin are now streaming on Paramount+ with Showtime. New episodes return on Friday, Jan. 24.
