All is not well within the Dovre mountains, as last seen at the end of Netflix's Norwegian film Troll by director Roar Uthaug. Released in 2022, the creature feature quickly skyrocketed to the top of the Netflix charts and has since cemented itself as the streamer's most popular non-English film of all time, with more than 178.6 million hours viewed.

During its November showcase, Netflix unveiled its international slate for 2025, and among the upcoming feature films is Troll 2. Uthaug returns to direct along with original writer Espen Aukan. Espen Horn and Kristian Strand Sinkerud will produce.

According to Deadline, the cast includes several newcomers and a few returning stars. Jon Ketil Johnsen is back as Professor Møller, and Gard B. Eidsvold as former disgraced professor Tobias Tidemann, father of Nora Tidemann. Sara Khorami, Gard B. Eidsvoid, Kim S. Falck-Jorgensen, Trond Magnum, and Aksel Almaas will also star.

Variety previously had the exclusive that Netflix would be producing a sequel to the creature feature. In the article, the sequel was teased as following a "fairy tale figure" again. Troll 2 began filming in 2024.

The latest update from Netflix doesn't include additional plot details about the story just yet. Troll followed a group of people working together to stop a recently awakened troll from destroying the land. The folklore-inspired movie primarily centers on the Tidemann family, including Tobias (Eidsvold) and his daughter Nora (Ine Marie Wilmann).

Due to his obsession with the mythology surrounding trolls, Tobias loses his job as a professor. But when an adult Nora suspects a real troll has appeared, she must turn to her father for assistance.

Though the first film ends with the death of the titular troll, the film leaves plenty of room for a sequel. Namely, the ending has characters wondering if there might be more trolls living deep inside the mountain range, and the movie's final scene depicts what appears to be a troll roaring and bursting forth from a pile of rubble.

In addition to Troll 2, Netflix also recently announced that it was working on a sequel to the French shark attack movie Under Paris, the streamer's second most popular non-English language film. Released this past June, the Xavier Gens-directed movie set in Paris told the story of how a giant shark came to be in the Seine River and the resulting carnage it causes. The ending of Under Paris teased that the shark and her children had invaded rivers all over the world, meaning a sequel has the chance to go global.
