Squid Game is the most popular show on Netflix after the release of its highly anticipated second season on Dec. 26, 2024. Is anyone surprised by this? Not one bit, seeing as though its first season was a smash hit back in 2020, and everyone had been waiting so long for its follow-up.
Now that a full week has passed since the second season dropped, most people have already watched all seven new episodes by now. After being left on such a shocking cliffhanger, everyone's wondering when they can expect more episodes to be released. Well, we'll tell you now that there won't be a Squid Game season 2 part 2.
While Squid Game season 1 had nine episodes, the second season only had seven. With two fewer episodes, many fans thought this was done on purpose so that there could be a part 2 to the second season. However, this is not the case. Instead, a bunch of new episodes will be released in a Squid Game season 3, aka the final season of the hit thriller series.
Before the second season was even released, Netflix had already confirmed that the third and final season would come out in 2025. However, the streaming giant hadn't announced an official release date — just a release year. After the release of Squid Game season 2, Netflix continued to share the 2025 release in its promotional material for the upcoming third season. But now, it looks like the official release date for Squid Game season 3 might've just been accidentally leaked by the streaming giant itself.
Squid Game season 3 release date rumor
In a recently deleted video uploaded to the official Netflix Korea YouTube channel, the streamer shared a teaser for the upcoming third season. Cool, right? Well, what's even cooler is that the streamer also seemed to had accidentally shared the official release date for Squid Game season 3 in the video's description. Here's a screenshot of the video's description via The Hollywood Handle's X account:
While the text in the video's description is in Korean, its translation to English teased that the third season would be available on Netflix on June 27, 2025. As mentioned above, this video is no longer live on the channel, which in itself seems suspicious. Could this mean that the third and final season will really come out on this date? Possibly. In a recent interview with Variety, the show's creator Hwang Dong-hyuk shared a summer or fall 2025 release window for the third season. A June 27 release would be considered a summer release, so there's that.
The cast and crew shot the second and third seasons back to back, so production is out of the way. The new episodes are most likely being edited in post-production as we speak, so a June release isn't out of the question. However, now that this leak happened, there's a chance that Netflix might change the release date. We'll have to wait and see. But for now, this is just a release date rumor. Nothing has been confirmed.
