And we're back! At the end of the sixth episode of Squid Game season 2, tensions reached a boiling point with the players dividing into two factions. One group wished to take their earned prize money and leave the competition, while the other was determined to stay and compete for the full cash prize. A violent bathroom clash ensued, resulting in several casualties. Now, we head into the seventh and final episode of Squid Game season 2, titled "Friend or Foe."
Spoilers ahead from Squid Game season 2 episode 7!
The season 2 finale picks up right where the sixth episode left off. The bathroom brawl continues for a bit longer before the masked men break things up and escort the surviving players back to the main quarters, where the rest of the players are. As the surviving players walk through the door to the main quarters, a woman on the intercom system calls out the players' numbers who were killed/eliminated in the bathroom brawl. Five players, including Thanos, are gone now.
Now, there are only 95 players left in the competition, and the cash prize has increased to 36,100,000,000 billion won. Both sides start arguing over who started the fight until player 100 asks which side lost more players. Then, each side begins counting its players.
Elsewhere, Jun-ho and his crew are asleep on their boat as they continue to search for the island where the competition is being held. One of the crew members rouses from a drunken slumber and catches the ship's captain taking apart the drone. He tries to question the captain, but the captain shoos him away and tells him to go back to sleep. However, the crew member suspects something's up. He follows the captain on the boat and is about to question him again when the captain stabs him repeatedly with a sharp object before throwing him overboard.
Woo-seok hears a lot of commotion and goes to check it out. He catches the captain standing in the rain and questions what he's doing. The captain comes up with a quick lie and tells Woo-seok that he should get some rest since he has to get up early the next day. They then part ways.
Back at the main headquarters, the side wanting to stay in the competition realizes they lost three players in the bathroom brawl. The other side (Gi-hun's side) lost only two players. This means they have a better chance of winning the vote to go back home. But Gi-hun knows that the other side is planning an attack. He tells Young-il/the Front Man and the rest of his main crew that the other side will try to attack them once the lights go off for the night. He explains that if the other side kills them, they'll be able to win the vote to stay in the competition and increase the cash prize at the same time.
So, what's his plan? Well, he's not concerned about fighting the other players. He wants to attack the people in charge, aka the Front Man, and end the games once and for all. It takes some convincing, but the other players on his team eventually agree to help. Meanwhile, the masked men are preparing for the fight between the players to happen. Gi-hun explains to his team how everything is going to work. He tells his team to hide under the beds once the fight breaks out. Then, once the masked men come in and break up the fight, they'll attack and take their guns.
Once the fight breaks out, more players' lives are lost, and even some of the lives of the masked men. Gi-hun and his team manage to steal their guns. The remaining masked men are called on the intercom to retreat, but one doesn't reach the door in time. Gi-hun and his team hold him hostage. They then force the hostage to lead them to the masked men's control room, but they are ambushed by more masked men along the way. This forces them to split up. Gi-hun and Jung-bae continue searching for the control room while the others stay back fighting.
As Gi-hun and Jung-bae get closer to the control room, more masked men are sent to attack them. Everyone starts running out of ammo, so one player is sent to find some. While the player ends up finding ammo, he doesn't bring it back to the others because he starts panicking. Another player is sent to find him.
Meanwhile, Young-il/the Front Man and two other players go after Gi-hun and Jung-bae because they need help. After finding Gi-hun and Jung-bae, Young-il/the Front Man tells them his plan. While Gi-hun and Jung-bae keep the masked men's attention, Young-il/the Front Man and the two other players will attack them from behind. After agreeing to the plan, they all split up.
This is when things go terribly wrong. Instead of following the plan, Young-il/the Front Man kills the two players with him. He's done playing as Young-il and is ready to be the Front Man again. Gi-hun calls him on a walkie-talkie, asking where he is. The Front Man lies and pretends that the masked men have overpowered them. After hanging up his call with Gi-hun, the Front Man calls his men and tells them to wrap up the fighting. More players are killed in the process.
Now, only Gi-hun and Jung-bae remain, and they find themselves surrounded by several masked men. They're forced to get on their knees as the Front Man approaches them. The Front Man points his gun at Gi-hun before switching his target to Jung-bae. Sadly, Gi-hun has to watch as the Front Man shoots and kills his friend. Then, the Front Man walks away. Gi-hun tries to get up to attack him, but the masked men pin him down to the floor. Gi-hun cries out in sorrow as he stares at his friend's lifeless body. The season 2 finale then cuts to the credits.
What could the Squid Game season 2 post-credits scene mean?
I hope you didn't turn off the episode as soon as you saw the credits because there's a post-credits scene. It's a really quick scene, so you might have to rewind back a couple of times. In the scene, it shows three players, 096, 100, and 353, walking up to two creepy dolls. One looks like the doll from the "Red Light, Green Light" game, while the other is a boy doll we've never seen before. After the dolls are shown, a traffic light with a red and green color is shown. The red light glows before turning off. Then, the green light turns on before the episode cuts back to the credits.
So, what could this all mean? Well, there's only one player out of the three shown that you'll recognize right away, and that's player 100. His name is Jeong-dae, and he's the grumpy older guy who is always advocating for everyone to stay in the competition. The other two players are unknown. It appears that they're about to play a new game. Since there's a red light and green light and those two dolls, it looks like they're about to play a new version of the "Red Light, Green Light" game. That's what we've gathered from this post-credits scene.
What could happen next in Squid Game season 3?
This is a really good question. Gi-hun has lost another close friend, so it's going to be interesting to see how he recovers. Also, he pretty much led a revolt, so he has to be punished somehow. I wonder what that punishment will be. I doubt he will be killed because he's the main character. Nobody is safe in Squid Game, so technically, he could be killed off. I just don't see him meeting his demise in the first episode.
It looks like the Front Man is done pretending to be a player and will return to being the overseer of the competition. As mentioned earlier, the post-credits scene suggests that there will be a new game introduced in season 3. Since there were two dolls, this could make it more difficult than the original "Red Light, Green Light" game. Also, how many players are in the competition now? Several of Gi-hun's team were killed in the attack, so they're at a disadvantage.
And what's going on with that captain? He seemed like a good person and friend to Jun-ho, but he's apparently hiding a secret. Is he working with the Front Man? Possibly. Will Jun-ho finally find the island and reunite with his brother? What will he do when he sees the Front Man? I can't see it being a happy reunion, seeing as though his brother shot him the last time they saw each other.
Then, we still need to figure out why No-eul is working as one of the masked people. Is it for the money? We know she's looking for her child, whom she left behind in North Korea. But how does this connect to her working for the Front Man?
With Squid Game season 3 being the final season of the survival horror series, I'm sure all of our questions will be answered. An official release date for the third season hasn't been announced yet, but it's confirmed to come out sometime in 2025.
All seven episodes of Squid Game season 2 are streaming now only on Netflix.
