The cast of the next Dexter series is expanding! Emmy-winning actor Peter Dinklage has joined Dexter: Resurrection, the upcoming sequel to Dexter: New Blood that just started filming recently. Michael C. Hall will also return to play the titular character in the upcoming show. Hall has also been involved in the ongoing prequel series, Dexter: Original Sin, the finale of which airs this Friday, Feb. 14.
According to the report from Variety, Dinklage is playing a character named Leon Prater, "a billionaire venture capitalist" with a dark side. It sounds like he could be one of Dexter's next adversaries. Dinklage is one of several new additions to the franchise. Uma Thurman has also been cast and her character is reportedly former Special Ops who works closely with Prater. Are they going to be the next villainous duo that Dexter must contend with?
Dinklage is an accomplished actor with a long career behind him, but he's best known for playing Tyrion Lannister in the hit HBO series Game of Thrones. Some of his other popular projects include movies like My Dinner with Hervé, Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri, I Care A Lot, and Cyrano. He recently voiced Dr. Dillamond in Wicked.
Dexter "died" at the end of New Blood, but the Original Sin series premiere revealed that he is actually alive, having somehow survived being shot by his son, Harrison (Jack Alcott). The prequel is set up like Dexter's life flashing before his eyes as the doctors tend to him in the hospital after his near brush with death.
The plot for Resurrection hasn't been revealed yet, but based on the New Blood finale it is likely that the next show in the Dexter universe will see the serial killer as a fugitive, since his identity as the Bay Harbor Butcher was revealed in the previous series. Other than that, the details about Dinklage and Thurman's characters are the only real story details we've gotten thus far.
Alcott will return as Harrison alongside David Zayas as Detective Angel Batista. Interestingly, James Remar has also been cast as a series regular in Resurrection, reprising his role as Dexter's father Harry Morgan, who died long before the original series started. If I had to theorize how Harry will return, it will be as a manifestation of Dexter's dark passenger or through flashbacks.
The Dexter: Original Sin finale begins streaming on Paramount+ with SHOWTIME this Friday, Feb. 14, and Dexter: Resurrection will debut later this year.
