With Halloween season inching closer by the day (just a few months left!), it's time to start planning movie marathons and considering this year's costume. There are several notable horror film releases on the way this summer and fall, such as a Rosemary's Baby prequel film, the next Alien movie, and Nosferatu from director Robert Eggers.

In preparation for what's ahead, why not take some time to look back and appreciate a few classic horror movies? Several of the most famous are currently available to stream on popular streaming services like Shudder, Prime Video, Tubi, and more.

Halloween, AMC+/Shudder

Find out how the legend of Michael Myers began with the original Halloween from director John Carpenter. Released in 1978, Halloween is one of the most iconic horror movies of all time and it spawned a massive franchise that comprises 13 films, novels, merchandise, and more. For now, you can stream Halloween on AMC+, specifically through Shudder, but the movie tends to pop up on free services like Plex and Tubi from time to time.

The Evil Dead, AMC+

The original Evil Dead movie is another classic that kickstarted the careers of two influential horror figures, Sam Raimi and Bruce Campbell. Made on a shoestring budget, the first Evil Dead was considered one of the scariest films ever made for a long time. You can currently stream it with an AMC+ subscription.

Rosemary's Baby, Paramount+/Prime Video

Based on the novel of the same name by Ira Levin, Rosemary's Baby's influence can be felt in many modern-day horror movies, especially in this year's titles like The First Omen and Immaculate. Mia Farrow delivers a show-stopping performance as the titular heroine Rosemary Woodhouse. A prequel film titled Apartment 7A will be released this fall on Paramount+, so now is the ideal time to visit the 1968 film.

The Shining, AMC+/Shudder

Rest in peace Shelley Duvall, who sadly passed away recently just a few days after her 75th birthday. Duvall's performance in The Shining is the glue that really makes the movie work. She's phenomenal as co-lead Wendy Torrance and more than capable of holding her own against Jack Nicholson's Jack Torrance. Yes, Nicholson's performance is often heralded, but without Wendy, the story wouldn't have been nearly as terrifying.

The Texas Chain Saw Massacre, Tubi/Freevee/Plex/Peacock

Not only is The Texas Chain Saw Massacre one of the best slasher movies it's also one of the most stylish horror films with its aesthetic and cinematography being significant influences on modern-day horror cinema (see X). Luckily for fans, the 1974 film is regularly available to stream on free services like Freevee, Plex, and Tubi. But you can also watch ad-free with a Peacock Premium subscription.

Nosferatu, Freevee/Tubi/Screambox

With Robert Eggers' version of Nosferatu hitting theaters this Christmas, it's time to finally sit down and watch the classic 1922 film. An unauthorized adaptation of Bram Stoker's gothic horror novel Dracula, Nosferatu is a relatively short German expressionist film that's worthwhile viewing for any true genre fan and will help you appreciate the 2024 adaptation all the more.
