It's kind of a sad week for horror fans now that the excellent Paramount+ series Evil has come to an end. Thursdays are going to feel empty for a bit without it, though I know the show's cast and creators are still hopeful the series might get a new life on a different streaming platform, so fingers crossed!

Beyond that, though, there are some intriguing new horror titles out this week, including the Netflix Original film The Deliverance, and the Blumhouse/Sony sci-fi thriller AfrAId. Plus, Trap will make its way to PVOD for those who have been waiting to check out the M. Night Shyamalan title at home.

Additionally, it was recently announced that A Quiet Place: Day One will make its streaming premiere on Paramount+ on Tuesday, August 27.

AfrAId (Theaters, Aug. 30)

John Cho stars in this Blumhouse sci-fi horror film about a family chosen to test out a revolutionary new piece of technology. A groundbreaking AI system that is supposed to make their lives much easier.

At first, AIA works beautifully, but as the trailer shows, things soon take a disastrous turn as she tries to exert an increasing amount of control over the family. AfrAId sounds similar to other recent "AI is bad" movies like M3GAN, but I'm always down for a new John Cho movie.

Out Comes the Wolves (Theater/VOD, Aug. 30)

Another IFC Films and Shudder film is releasing in select theaters and on VOD this week. This tense survival thriller from director Adam MacDonald follows a man, his best friend, and her fiancé on a weekend trip in the wilderness where they're attacked by a pack of wolves forcing them to fight for their lives.

The Deliverance (Netflix, Aug. 30)

After receiving a limited theatrical run, The Deliverance will make its global debut exclusively on Netflix this week. The possession horror film reunites director Lee Daniels and Mo'Nique for the first time since their Oscar-winning 2009 film Precious. Inspired by the true story of the Latoya Ammons family haunting, The Deliverance follows a single mother who believes her children have become possessed after moving into a new house.

Slingshot (VOD, Aug. 30)

The director of 1408, Mikael Håfström, returns for this claustrophobic science fiction film starring Casey Affleck and Laurence Fishburne as two astronauts in a space crew onboard a ship headed for Saturn's moon Titan. They prepare to do a dangerous "slingshot" maneuver that makes one astronaut begin second-guessing his reality.

Trap (PVOD, Aug. 30)

M. Night Shyamalan's buzzy new psychological thriller Trap releases on PVOD this Friday, meaning those who didn't get the chance to see Josh Hartnett in all of his serial killer glory as The Butcher can enjoy the movie at home.

Hartnett's character, Cooper Adams, is a secret murderer who takes his young daughter to a huge concert (played by Shyamalan's daughter Saleka Night Shyamalan), only to realize that the police and FBI already knew that he'd be there and have organized a massive trap to capture The Butcher before he can kill again.
