Agatha All Along episode 1 recap: "Seekest Thou the Road"
On Sept. 18, Disney+ dropped the first two episodes of Agatha All Along, a spinoff of the hit miniseries WandaVision. Overall, the initial response has been great with many critics and regular viewers praising the cast performances, plot, cinematography, etc. And we couldn't agree more. Now, we can't wait to see the rest of the season!
Agatha All Along is set after the events of WandaVision and follows the infamous villain Agatha Harkness, who, if you recall from the WandaVision season finale, ends up trapped in the town of Westview, New Jersey, after Wanda Maximoff/Scarlet Witch casts a spell on her. The spell makes it so that Agatha is powerless and doesn't remember her true identity as a powerful witch. Instead, she's transformed back into her sitcom persona, Agnes, and is forced to remain under this identity while stuck in Westview.
In Agatha All Along episode 1, the story picks up just where the WandaVision season finale left off. Agatha/Agnes is trapped in Westview, where she works as a detective at the Westview police station. However, none of this is real. It's all a part of Wanda's spell. Agatha doesn't know her true identity, but with the help of some people, she soon discovers who she really is and makes it her mission to stage a comeback.
Here's a recap of what all happened in Agatha All Along episode 1 titled "Seekest Thou the Road."
Spoilers ahead from Agatha All Along episode 1!
The first episode opens with Detective Agnes O'Connor/Agatha heading to a crime scene in the woods where a woman's body is found. She was on temporary probation for assaulting a suspect but has been called back to work because her boss believes she's the only qualified person who could crack the case.
As Agatha/Agnes heads over to look at the body with her co-worker named Herb, Herb gives her a library slip that was found on the dead woman's body. He explains to Agatha/Agnes that the woman died from blunt force trauma. As Agatha/Agnes looks over the crime scene, she finds a broach on the ground and pockets it before getting a closer look at the body. She speaks a little more with Herb about the crime scene before she storms off.
The episode then cuts to the title sequence, where it's set up like a crime-style television series called "Agnes of Westview." This is a fictional show in which Wanda trapped Agatha. That's why Agatha is acting as if she's a detective. Once the intro ends, the episode cuts to Agatha/Agnes at the Westview Library, where she turns in the library slip to a librarian named Ms. D Jones aka Dottie. After running the book title on the slip, Dottie tells Agatha/Agnes that the book was stolen three years ago, but other copies can be found in the library's natural sciences section.
Hoping to get answers from the book to help her with the case, Agatha/Agnes makes her way over to the natural sciences section to find it's been torched. As she looks over the burnt books, a mysterious man appears, telling her that a fire happened and that's what caused all the books to be burnt. He then walks away. After this eerie encounter, Agatha/Agnes returns to the police station, where she finds out someone will be working with her on the murder case.
That person is Agent Rio Vidal, a federal agent that Agatha/Agnes absolutely hates. After their intense conversation in which Rio seemed to be constantly hinting at something, Agatha/Agnes heads to the pawn shop to get information on the broach she had pocketed earlier. During the inspection, she finds out that the broach isn't a broach but a locket instead, and inside is a lock of hair.
Later that night, Agatha/Agnes heads back to the police station. She sits at her desk, looking over the library slip and the book's name on the slip, which is "Dialogue and Rhetoric: Known History of Learning and Debate." She uncovers that the book's title forms the acronym “DARKHOLD." But before she can look more into what it means, her boss appears at her door and tells her to go home.
Shortly after arriving home, Agatha/Agnes hears a knock at her door. She opens the door and sees Rio standing there with a box of pizza in her hands. She invites her in, where they talk about the case, but then Rio starts asking her strange questions, such as, "Do you remember why you hate me?" and "Are you hiding evidence?” They don't get to stay on this topic for long because suddenly, a noise is heard from upstairs.
Agatha/Agnes makes her way upstairs to find a burglar in her home. She chases them outside, but the burglar gets away. The chase comes to an end when the burglar gets hit by a car. The person in the vehicle is Agatha's neighbor, and the burglar turns out to be a teen boy. Agatha/Agnes then arrests the teen boy and takes him in for questioning.
Back at the police station in the interrogation room, Agatha/Agnes asks the teen boy what he was after when he invaded her home, and he replies by saying, "The Road." Agatha/Agnes doesn't really know what he means, but she thinks that he's a suspect in the murder case, so she starts grilling him about where he was when the murder happened. The teen boy insists that he has no idea what Agatha/Agnes is talking about, but she doesn't believe him. She slams a bunch of photos on the table from the crime scene and starts asking the teen what he did to the murdered woman.
The teen boy looks down at the photos, but instead of being of a dead body, they're now photos of flowers. He tells Agatha/Agnes this, and once she looks at the images again, she realizes he's right. Agatha/Agnes then turns to look at what was initially a two-way mirror in the room and finds that it's now a painting. Now, she's completely freaked out. As she turns back around to look at the teen, she notices that he's reciting an incantation. Fed up with his shenanigans, she decides to throw him in jail for the night.
After everything that just happened, Agatha/Agnes is starting to question things, so she heads to the morgue to check out the dead woman's body. She doesn't see the body at first, but after closing her eyes and opening them, it suddenly appears on a table. As she approaches the body, she notices the same library slip from earlier hanging on the toe of the body. But now it has a name on it which reads, "W. Maximoff."
Rio suddenly appears in the room, revealing to Agatha/Agnes that Wanda Maximoff, aka the Scarlet Witch, had trapped her in Westview and taken all of the copies of the Darkhold with her. Agatha/Agnes then begins to shed away her sitcom persona of Agnes, essentially breaking Wanda's spell on her. She looks over at the library slip again to see her real name, Agatha Harkness, appear on the slip right above Wanda's. This lets the viewers know that Agatha possessed the Darkhold book before Wanda stole it from her. WandaVision fans would know this already, though.
We're taken back to Agatha's house, where we see a naked Agatha. Agatha now knows her true identity but is angry at the fact that she's been under a spell. She makes her way across the street to ask her neighbor how long she's been living in Westview. The neighbor tells her three years. Agatha then heads back inside her house, where she tries to wield magic, only to discover she's powerless. As she looks around her home, she hears a thumping noise coming from a closet.
She opens the closet to find the teen boy from earlier, letting her know that he's actually real and not a "figment of her imprisoned mind." She had kidnapped and placed him in her closet. Then, Rio suddenly blasts through the front door. However, she's not dressed as a federal agent anymore. That was just a disguise. She's the Green Witch, and she's come to exact her revenge. Agatha and the Green Witch begin fighting, and the Green Witch ultimately gets the upper hand. But just as she's about to stab Agatha, Agatha manages to convince her to postpone their match since she doesn't have her powers.
The Green Witch accepts Agatha's proposal, but just before she takes her leave, she tells Agatha that other witches detest her and want to see her demise just as much as her. Those witches are the Salem Seven, and according to the Green Witch, they'll be headed to Agatha's place at sundown. Once the Green Witch walks out the front door, Agatha looks over at the teen boy in her closet. Now, she's left trying to figure out what to do with him. The episode then cuts to the credits.
