Agatha All Along episode 4 recap: "If I Can't Reach You/Let My Song Teach You"
After successfully completing the first trial on The Witches' Road, Agatha's coven finds out that they're down a witch. But is Mrs. Hart really dead, and what's the next perilous trial the coven will have to face? Here's what happens in Agatha All Along episode 4 titled "If I Can't Reach You/Let My Song Teach You."
Spoilers from Agatha All Along episode 4 ahead!
Well, Sharon aka Mrs. Hart is actually dead, and now the rest of the coven is playing the blame game on who's responsible as they prepare to bury her. Alice walks over to look at Mrs. Hart's body while the others stare at her. Lilia speaks up and says that everyone should be respectful towards Alice since her mom could've died on The Road too. However, Alice shuts her down by saying she didn't lose her mother to The Witches' Road. She tells everyone that her mother died in a hotel fire when she was on the road on tour.
Jen then asks Alice why she decided to join the coven and face the trials of The Witches' Road if she knows what happened to her mom, and Alice responds by saying that her mother once told her that The Road would save her. From what? I guess we'll eventually find out later.
As Alice and Teen dig a grave for Mrs. Hart, Agatha, Jen, and Lilia argue about them now being an incomplete coven. Agatha claims they don't need a replacement for Mrs. Hart now that they're on The Road, but Jen and Lilia beg to differ. They begin arguing about the lyrics to The Ballad, with Jen and Lilia arguing that the lyrics state that they need a complete coven to go through the trials, while Agatha claims that they only need two witches in their coven. Since Alice's mom wrote the most popular version of The Ballad, the others ask Alice's opinion on the matter.
Alice asks Agatha about how many witches left The Road with her when she went through the trials last time, and Agatha puts up two fingers, indicating that she was right about only needing two witches to go through the trials. Jen and Lilia still don't believe Agatha and refuse to go forward on The Road without a Green Witch. This leads to them summoning a "backup" Green Witch with a spell, and guess who it turns out to be? It's none other than Rio Vidal!
Agatha and Rio's reunion doesn't go well as expected since there's some obvious bad blood between the two, but Agatha has no choice but to allow her to join their coven. The others are pretty much indifferent about Rio, but since Agatha doesn't like her, they see that as a plus. As they walk down The Road, a house suddenly appears in the far distance. It's time for the second trial, and Alice wants no parts. However, she has no choice because she can't escape it. They walk up to the house's front door and notice a waxing moon on it, signifying it's the fire phase. Alice looks the most apprehensive about entering the house. Why is that?
Once everyone enters the house, their attire is immediately changed to something people would've worn in a '70s rock band. Remember, The Road changes for the coven. As everyone looks around the house for a clue to get the second test started, Alice notices a photo hanging up on the wall of her mother. Lilia approaches Alice and asks if her mother was trying to open The Road with her concerts. Alice responds by saying that her mother's fans were her coven. In other words, she confirms that that was her mother's intent. Lilia starts saying nonsensical things to Alice, and although Alice is concerned, she ultimately brushes it off.
In the recording booth room in the house, Agatha and Rio have a little chat. Rio asks her how the quest for power has been going, and Agatha replies by saying, "It's going." Rio then tells Agatha she's impatient and is ready to "cause some damage." However, Agatha tells her it's too early. Rio explains to Agatha that she was summoned instead of another witch because she was the "most appropriate candidate." She tells her that it wasn't up to her. She then asks Agatha why she brought Teen. Agatha responds by saying that she needed hands, but Rio is suspicious of her answer.
While trying to get Rio to call a truce, Agatha purposely presses a button in the recording booth that turns on the intercom so everyone in the main room can hear their discussion. Her reason for doing this is so that she can get the others to hate Rio. She gets Rio to expose her evil plan, which is to watch Agatha kill all the other witches and then collect their bodies. Of course, the others aren't okay with this and are about to confront Rio before a distorted song starts playing over the speakers.
Teen put on the record thinking it was a clue, but it starts playing backwards. Agatha throws the record on the floor and begins stomping on it, but it's too late. They've been cursed, and the second test has officially started. Alice starts feeling lighter, while Lilia's body starts smoking. Since Alice is the protection witch, she instantly snaps into action and draws a circle around Lilia to get the smoke to stop.
Now, the coven is left to try to figure out how to end the curse. Lilia tells the others that the only way they'll be able to end it is if they face it. Suddenly, Jen's body starts smoking, and Alice draws a circle of protection around her to get the smoke to stop. Jen and Lilia notice that they now have identical burn marks on their shoulders. Alice picks up the broken record and realizes it's her mom's version of The Ballad. Agatha accuses Alice of bringing the curse in with her, and Alice starts crying.
She tells everyone that she didn't think the curse was real, but now she knows it is. She shows her shoulder to the others, which has a faint scar. She thought it was a birthmark, but her mother had the same one. Apparently, it's a generational curse that's been passed down in their family, and now it's affected the coven. Agatha and the rest of the coven come to a realization that the only way they can break the curse is if they play Alice's mom's version of The Ballad. Why? Well, her version is a protection spell that's been saving Alice's life all these years. They believe that if they play it now, it'll end the curse.
As everyone takes an instrument and starts playing The Ballad, the house begins to catch on fire. While playing the guitar, a sharp shard of glass pokes Teen in his side, but he continues on playing. Suddenly, the curse in the form of a flying demonic creature appears in the house and lands on Alice's shoulder as she plays the piano. The creature somehow sets Alice on fire, but she continues playing. As she finishes belting out her last note, the creature suddenly vanishes, the timer stops, and the piano opens to reveal a passageway back to The Road. They've successfully ended the curse and completed the second trial.
But Teen is badly injured and they must save him. They return to The Road and place Teen on a tree stump. They then take out the glass shard that was stuck in his side. He won't stop bleeding, though. Jen does a healing spell on him, and Teen's injuries instantly heal. He'll live! Later, some of the coven sit around a campfire and share stories of their past. Jen shares that she was once an 11th-generation root worker and midwife and lost her power to a man who somehow bound her without having magic himself.
Elsewhere, Agatha waits for Teen to wake up. As soon as he awakens, he asks Agatha if she was the person who put the sigil on him. Agatha tells him no at first, but after thinking about it, she tells him that she's not sure. According to Agatha, sigils work on the witch that casts them, too, and they can only be destroyed when they're no longer needed. Agatha and Teen have a small heart-to-heart moment before Teen ruins it by asking about Agatha's son. Agatha walks away from him to be with the others.
As the coven sits around the campfire discussing their battle scars, Rio tells everyone that she has one as well. She explains that a long time ago, she hurt someone she loved because of her job. And that person is her scar. Agatha storms off, letting us know that the person Rio was talking about is her. Rio follows Agatha, and just as they are about to make up and kiss, Rio blurts out something that has Agatha pull away from her instantly. She says to Agatha, "That boy isn't yours." Agatha looks at her with a sad look before she fixes her face with a smirk and walks away. The episode then cuts to the credits.
It's obvious that Rio is talking about Teen, but how does she know that he isn't Agatha's son? I guess we'll have to continue watching the dark fantasy miniseries to find out.
