Alien: Romulus is one of 10 new scary movies releasing this week

This week's biggest release is easily one of the summer's most anticipated movies, Alien: Romulus. For those interested in pulling a double feature, you could also check out the Netflix Original film The Deliverance or the Elizabeth Banks-led Skincare, both of which will start a limited theatrical run this week.
At home, several movies and a couple of true crime docuseries are hitting streaming and VOD, including the Jessica Chastain and Anne Hathaway thriller Mothers' Instinct and another Laci Peterson docuseries on Netflix. A new episode of Evil season 4 streams on Thursday on Paramount+.
Here's what to look out for in terms of new horror and thriller content the week of August 12!
Alien: Romulus (Aug. 16, Theaters)
Set after the events of the original Alien, Alien: Romulus follows a group of space colonists exploring a derelict space station, only to uncover an extraterrestrial nightmare. The latest in the horror franchise is getting great buzz with horror filmmaker Fede Álvarez directing and bringing his love of practical effects with him.
Consumed (Aug. 16, VOD)
Starring Chucky's Devon Sawa, Consumed is a darkly captivating thriller centering on a married couple stuck between a "skin-stealing monster" and a madman trying to get revenge.
Dancing Village: The Curse Begins (Aug. 16, Shudder)
Shudder's first big August exclusive film is this Indonesian film based on a novel by SimpleMan. Previously released in Indonesia, the movie is making its US debut this week and follows a young woman instructed to return a stolen bracelet to a remote village.
On the strange island, Mila (Maudy Effrosina), her cousin, and a few of their friends discover that the village has been visited by a mythic being. She is roped into participating in a ritual to select the next "Dawuh," a person cursed to dance until they die.
Worst Ex Ever (Aug. 14, Netflix) **RESCHEDULED FOR AUG. 28**
A continuation of the Netflix/Blumhouse TV true crime franchise started with Worst Roommate Ever, Worst Ex Ever is a similar show that looks into the dark side of love.
American Murder: Laci Peterson (Aug. 14, Netflix)
In addition to Worst Ex Ever, Netflix is also releasing a new docuseries about the disappearance and subsequent murder of Laci Peterson, which will feature Laci's mother and some of her friends speaking publicly about the devastating murder for the very first time.
We Are Zombies (Aug. 13, Screambox)
A unique take on the "zombie apocalypse" subgenre, We Are Zombies is set in a world where humans and zombies coexist in relative peace. But an evil corporation threatens to upend the balance and a group of friends must unite to stop them.
Mothers' Instinct (Aug. 13, VOD)
Jessica Chastain and Anne Hathaway star in Neon's American remake of the 2018 French-language film. It was released theatrically in select theaters in July but will make its way to VOD on Tuesday.
The King Tide (Aug. 16, VOD)
This Canadian thriller takes place in a small fishing village. Some people herald a child believed to have mystical powers as a potential savior, while others doubt her supposed spiritual prowess, pushing the villagers to the brink of civil war.
The Deliverance (Aug. 16, Theaters)
Based on the Latoya Ammons family hauntings, The Deliverance is a new exorcism horror movie from Lee Daniels. A Netflix Original, the film will make its official global debut later this month but is being released in select theaters on August 16.
Skincare (Aug. 16, Theaters)
Part horror movie and part crime thriller, Skincare stars Elizabeth Banks as Hope, an esthetician trying to launch her own line of skincare products. But then, someone opens a rival boutique across from her store, and Hope embarks on a mission of revenge against the person she believes is trying to sabotage her and her business. Nathan Fillion, Lewis Pullman, and Michaela Jaé Rodriguez also star.
