An Emmy-nominated horror series just hit Netflix, and it's an absolute must-watch
On Oct. 1, Netflix added the first season of the Emmy-nominated horror series Yellowjackets to its platform, and just like that, the show has risen up the streamer's top 10 TV shows list. It only took a day of being on the streaming platform, and the horror series is already one of the most popular shows on Netflix at the moment. As of Oct. 2, it's ranking at the No. 7 spot, and it doesn't look like it'll be dropping off the list anytime soon. If you haven't watched this incredible series yet, what are you waiting on? Seriously!
Yellowjackets is a Showtime series created by Ashley Lyle and Bart Nickerson. They're best known for previously writing episodes for the supernatural drama series The Originals and the crime drama series Narcos: Mexico. The first season of Yellowjackets premiered on Showtime back in November 2021 and was an instant hit. Most critics and viewers had mainly positive things to say about the series, with many praising the story, writing, direction, and performances, particularly those of the talented ensemble cast.
Due to the first season's success, Showtime saw it as a no-brainer to renew the show for a second season. And that is exactly what the TV network did only a month after the first season came out. But before the second season could even premiere in March 2023, Showtime decided to renew the horror series for a third season in December 2022. It appears that Showtime knew it had a hit on its hands, and it wanted to milk the show for all it's worth. I'd say that was a smart business move because after two seasons, Yellowjackets has only gotten better, and I can see this show going on for more and more installments if given the chance.
The horror series takes place in two timelines: 1996 and 2021. In the 1996 timeline, the story follows a high school girls' soccer team who winds up stranded in the Canadian wilderness after their plane crashes while traveling to a national tournament. Now, the girls must do everything they can to survive, even resort to cannibalism. In the 2021 timeline, we follow the survivors from the 1996 timeline, who are now adults and are still struggling with their unhealed traumas from their time in the wilderness.
The amazingly talented ensemble cast is made up of Melanie Lynskey, Tawny Cypress, Ella Purnell, Sophie Nélisse, Jasmin Savoy Brown, Sophie Thatcher, Samantha Hanratty, Steven Krueger, Warren Kole, Christina Ricci, Juliette Lewis, Courtney Eaton, Liv Hewson, Kevin Alves, Simone Kessell, Lauren Ambrose, and others.
As mentioned above, Yellowjackets is an Emmy-nominated series. It has been nominated for 10 Emmys so far, including for Outstanding Drama Series. Christina Ricci was even nominated for the Golden Globe for Best Performance by a Female Actor in a Supporting Role on Television for her acting work on the show. Honestly, I can see Yellowjackets being nominated for many more prestigious awards in the future, and hopefully, even securing some wins!
Unfortunately, only the first season of the horror series is available to stream on Netflix at the moment. We're hoping that Netflix acquires the streaming rights to the second season soon. Maybe if the first season performs well on the streamer, this will push Netflix to add the second season. Fingers crossed! But for now, you'll have to head on over to Paramount+ if you want to watch the second season. However, it's important to mention that you must have the Paramount+ with Showtime plan to watch it on the streaming platform.
Yellowjackets season 3 is currently in the works and is set to premiere on Showtime sometime in 2025. If Netflix were to ever acquire streaming rights to the new season, it would be a long time from now. We'll let you know if this ever happens, though.
