Ariana DeBose is haunted by a spirit at her creepy new restaurant in House of Spoils

Amazon has revealed the first official trailer for the upcoming horror-thriller film House of Spoils starring Oscar-winner Ariana DeBose (West Side Story). DeBose plays "Chef" in the "genre-bending" film, which explores the chaos she encounters in the kitchen and out of it after relocating to a remote estate to start her own farm-to-table restaurant.
But it soon becomes apparent that the ghostly presence of the former owner remains, and, based on the trailer, it seems like all hell breaks loose while Chef is trying to adapt to her new workplace.
Based on the trailer, the movie looks like a twisted mix of The Menu and The Bear, with an extra dash of horror. Production even consulted with food stylist Zoe Hegedus to create the delectable dishes we see on-screen, like squid ink risotto, though the version in the trailer might have a few too many creepy crawlies for my tastes. Hegedus' previous credits include Midsommar, Poor Things, and both Dune movies by Denis Villeneuve.
As you can see in the trailer embedded above, the story will begin with DeBose's character leaving her previous place of employment to open her own establishment in a stately, ivy-covered estate located somewhere "upstate." With some tender love, care, and serious renovations, she and her staff work to transform the place into a gorgeous fine-dining restaurant that caters to the finest clientele. It all sounds great at first, until things start going seriously wrong.
Chef is warned to avoid the previous owner's garden, and not to eat anything from out there, which is alarming, to say the least. Then she starts to notice things like bugs crawling in her food and weird stuff happening throughout the estate. One clip appears to show someone being shoved down and forced to swallow a liquid of some kind. Blood? Needless to say, this will not be the dream come true Chef was anticipating.
House of Spoils marks the second collaboration from writers-directors Bridget Savage Cole and Danielle Krudy. The pair previously worked together on Blow the Man Down. The movie is also the latest in a long line of collaborations between Amazon MGM Studios and Blumhouse Television.
Barbie Ferreira and Arian Moayed also star. House of Spoils begins streaming on Prime Video on October 3.
