One of the most highly anticipated theatrical releases of 2024 would have to be Beetlejuice Beetlejuice. It's set to be released in theaters this September, so we've got some time to prepare before it comes out. If you're looking forward to seeing this film, you must continue reading to learn all there is to know about it.

Beetlejuice Beetlejuice is an upcoming fantasy horror comedy film that was helmed by Tim Burton from a screenplay co-written by Alfred Gough and Miles Millar. Yes, these are the same creative geniuses behind Netflix's Wednesday. Gough and Millar wrote the script from a story they devised together with Seth Grahame-Smith.

Serving as a sequel to the '80s horror classic Beetlejuice, Beetlejuice Beetlejuice is also the second film in the Beetlejuice franchise. Burton had been trying to make a sequel since the '90s, but plans always ended up falling through. It wasn't until February 2022 that things start looking up. A sequel was announced again with Brad Pitt's Plan B Entertainment signed on to produce alongside Warner Bros. Months later, Burton said he would not be involved with the film, but later backtracked and signed on to direct and produce.

In March 2023, it was reported that Wednesday's Jenna Ortega was in talks to star in the movie as Lydia's daughter, Astrid Deetz. That May, her casting was confirmed. Also during this time, it was reported that composer Danny Elfman would be returning to compose the score for the sequel, having worked with Burton on the first film. It was also reported that Gough and Millar would be writing the script and that Michael Keaton and Winona Ryder were expected to reprise their roles as Betelgeuse and Lydia Deetz. They were later confirmed to be returning.

Justin Theroux, Burn Gorman, Arthur Conti, Filipe Cates, Willem Dafoe, and Monica Bellucci were also announced to have joined the cast. Dafoe was revealed to play an afterlife police officer, while Bellucci would play Betelgeuse's wife. In addition, Catherine O'Hara was reported to be reprising her role as Delia Deetz in the sequel. Unfortunately, Jeffrey Jones (Charles Deetz) and Geena Davis (Barbara Maitland) were confirmed not to be returning for the new film.

Filming officially started on the sequel in May 2023 and wrapped at the end of November of that year. In March 2024, Keaton was on SiriusXM’s The Jess Cagle Show and shared that he had seen a completed rough cut of Beetlejuice Beetlejuice but that some editing still needed to be done. It looks like the horror flick might still be in the process of being edited as of May 2024.

Beetlejuice Beetlejuice theatrical release date

The horror film is scheduled to be released in theaters on Friday, Sept. 6, 2024. Tickets are not available at the moment, but they will be as the film approaches its release date. Also, a streaming and digital release has not been confirmed, but they're expected to happen sometime after the movie's theatrical run. When it comes to where Beetlejuice Beetlejuice would stream, it will most likely be Max because that's where Warner Bros. movies stream after they leave the theaters. Beetlejuice Beetlejuice is being distributed by Warner Bros. Pictures, making it a Warner Bros. film.

Here's what the horror film will be about via a Warner Bros. press release:

"Beetlejuice is back! After an unexpected family tragedy, three generations of the Deetz family return home to Winter River. Still haunted by Beetlejuice, Lydia's life is turned upside down when her rebellious teenage daughter, Astrid, discovers the mysterious model of the town in the attic and the portal to the Afterlife is accidentally opened. With trouble brewing in both realms, it's only a matter of time until someone says Beetlejuice's name three times and the mischievous demon returns to unleash his very own brand of mayhem."

I know we shared who will be in the film earlier, but here's who each cast member will be playing.

  • Michael Keaton as Betelgeuse
  • Winona Ryder as Lydia Deetz
  • Catherine O'Hara as Delia Deetz
  • Jenna Ortega as Astrid Deetz
  • Justin Theroux as Rory
  • Monica Bellucci as Delores, Betelgeuse's wife
  • Willem Dafoe as Wolf Jackson, an afterlife officer who used to be a B movie action star when he was living
  • Burn Gorman as Father Damien, a reverend in Winter River
