Channing Tatum chills in Blink Twice trailer
By TJ Dietsch
Throughout his career, Channing Tatum has shown that he can handle everything from dance and drama to comedy and action, but how will he play as a villain? We'll find out when Blink Twice opens theatrically at the end of the summer.
The film marks Zoe Kravitz's directorial debut, though she has impressed audiences on the other side of the camera in films like The Batman, Mad Max: Fury Road and the Fantastic Beasts films. She co-wrote the script with E.T Feigenbaum who penned an episode of the short-lived High Fidelity TV reboot, which Kravitz starred in.
Here's how MGM officially described the film: "When tech billionaire Slater King (Channing Tatum) meets cocktail waitress Frida (Naomi Ackie) at his fundraising gala, sparks fly. He invites her to join him and his friends on a dream vacation on his private island. It’s paradise. Wild nights blend into sun soaked days and everyone's having a great time. No one wants this trip to end, but as strange things start to happen, Frida begins to question her reality. There is something wrong with this place. She’ll have to uncover the truth if she wants to make it out of this party alive."
A month before Blink Twice comes out, Tatum will star in the NASA drama Fly Me To The Moon. His co-star Ackie recently played the lead in Whitney Houston: I Wanna Dance With Somebody as well as Jannah in Star Wars: Episode IX - The Rise Of Skywalker.
And that's just the tip of the casting iceberg. As you can see in the trailer, the film also stars some pretty heavy hitters in the world of horror and genre entertainment. You've got Twin Peaks' own Kyle MacLachlan as well as the legendary Geena Davis (Beetlejuice, The Fly) and Christian Slater (Heathers, The Spiderwick Chronicles). The cast also includes Adria Arjona (Andor, Morbius), Alia Shawkat (Search Party, The Final Girls) and Haley Joel Osment (The Sixth Sense, Future Man). It will be interesting to see how Kravitz utilizes these well known performers in her telling of this island thriller.
From the looks of the trailer, Blink Twice seems to be in line with the "evil rich folks" trend that sits at the heart of everything from Squid Game and Run, Sweetheart, Run to Ready Or Not, The Invitation (2020) and so many other prominent films, not just of the decade, but from horror history. Of course, that's a pretty wide genre net to cast, but that kind of film definitely plays on cultural fears that the wildly wealthy can essentially do whatever they want to whoever they want and get away with it. The trailer also hints at maybe some cultish activities going on, but MGM is clearly not looking to spoil too much about the film, so expect it to pack plenty of surprises.
Blink Twice is set to debut in theaters on August 23.
