Can you believe August is already here? Might as well be Halloween! Luckily for horror fans, this month features several big releases like Trap, Cuckoo, and the next film in the Alien franchise. This week, we finally get to see the highly-anticipated debut of Cuckoo, which stars Hunter Schafer and Dan Stevens. Stevens already starred in one of this year's best horror movies, Abigail, and it looks like Cuckoo is going to be equally great!

While Cuckoo is sure to dominate theaters, at-home viewing is slim pickings, with the only big new horror release on demand, the Steamboat Willie horror movie The Mouse Trap. There is an intriguing new true crime doc coming to Max, though, and new episodes of Evil are still airing Thursdays on Paramount+! Only three episodes of the series remain.

Cuckoo (Aug. 9, Theater)

The next big horror release coming to theaters is the latest from Neon, the same distributor who gave us the record-breaking Longlegs just last month. Starring Dan Stevens, Hunter Schafer, and Jessica Henwick, Cuckoo debuted with an impressive 82% approval score on Rotten Tomatoes.

Cuckoo has been receiving great buzz and reviews since its world premiere at the 74th Berlin International Film Festival earlier this year. Seventeen-year-old Gretchen (Schafer) is forced to relocate to an Alpine resort with her father. Her new home is plagued with oddities and Gretchen soon uncovers a horrific secret connected to her family.

Taken Together: Who Killed Lyric and Elizabeth? (Aug. 8, Max)

Max Original docuseries Taken Together explores an Iowa cold case referred to as The Evansdale Murders, when two young girls, Lyric Cook-Morrissey and Elizabeth Collins, were abducted and killed in 2012.

Lyric and Elizabeth were last seen on a bike ride together on Friday, July 13, 2012. Later that year, the case took a tragic turn when their bodies were discovered and the case labeled a double homicide. The upcoming docuseries is a three-parter that will explore the unsolved case and hopefully encourage anyone with information to come forward.

The Mouse Trap (Aug. 6, VOD)

The first of several planned horror movies based on Disney IP that's entered the public domain, The Mouse Trap is a carnival-set slasher following a group of young adults being hunted by Steamboat Willie, a.k.a. one of the earliest iterations of Mickey Mouse who premiered in the 1928 short film of the same name. "The mouse is out," teases the trailer. I'm sure it'll be a fun little low-budget slasher akin to Winnie the Pooh: Blood and Honey.

Borderlands (Aug. 9, Theaters)

Not a horror movie necessarily but Borderlands was co-written and directed by notable horror filmmaker Eli Roth (Hostel, Thanksgiving).

Based on the popular video game franchise of the same name, Borderlands is a PG-13 sci-fi action film about a team of outlaws working together to find a missing girl. Despite receiving little fanfare, Borderlands does boast a surprisingly stacked cast, featuring stars like Cate Blanchett, Kevin Hart, Jack Black, Jamie Lee Curtis, Gina Gershon, and Ariana Greenblatt.
