Discovery Channel is bringing back two series in August, along with an intriguing new special focusing on Amelia Earhart, who disappeared along with her airplane in 1937.

Expedition X is hosted by Josh Gates, who is joined this season by scientists Phil Torres and Heather Amaro. Amaro is an experienced third-generation paranormal researcher/investigator, and is new to the team.

Expedition X premieres Wednesday, August 14 at 9:00 p.m. ET

In the season premiere episode, Gates, Torres and Amaro visit West Virginia, where they will be investigating Trans-Allegheny Lunatic Asylum. The abandoned psychiatric hospital is very well known for its tragic history and subsequent reports of paranormal activity.

Trans-Allegheny Lunatic Asylum was in operation from 1864 until 1994, and changed names a few times along the way. It was originally built to hold 250 patients, but in the 1950s it housed as many as 2,400 people, so that time period could definitely have contributed to the negative energy many people feel when visiting the property.

As with many older asylums, a large number of deaths occurred at Trans-Allegheny, and it was home to the West Virginia Lobotomy Project in the 1950s. In the 1980s, patients who were considered to be “uncontrollable” were sometimes locked in cages.

In future episodes of Expedition X, the team investigates the legend of the Loch Ness Monster, the Bigfoot-type creature in Florida known as the skunk ape, and claims of haunting activity in historical Savannah, Georgia.

Following the season premiere of Expedition X, stick around for Expedition Bigfoot

The new season of Expedition Bigfoot begins the same night at 10:00 p.m. ET, as researchers Dr. Mireya Mayor, Russell Acord and Bryce Johnson resume their search for what is perhaps the most iconic cryptid of them all.

Together, the team returns to the Lost Coast of California, which is where the most sightings of Bigfoot have been located. This season, they are determined to find evidence of a breeding ground, and they have the best technology on hand to assist them.

On Wednesday, August 7 at 8:00 p.m., Finding Amelia make its debut on Discovery Channel. The special takes us back in time to 1945, when Australian soldiers discover Amelia Earhart’s airplane on the site where it crashed eight years earlier in Papua, New Guinea.

We then return to the present, when a group of specialists uses the testimonies of those soldiers along with an historical patrol map to find Earhart’s plane and potentially bring her body home.
