First look at Lee Daniels' exorcism horror movie The Deliverance, streaming this August
By Mads Lennon
Academy Award-nominated director Lee Daniels' next big movie is a horror film described as a "genre-defying take on darkness, possession, and finding a higher power." Coming to Netflix on August 30, The Deliverance is based on the true story of Latoya Ammons, a resident of Gary, Indiana, who claimed she and her family were possessed by demons in 2014.
Ammons' story generated significant media attention a decade ago, as it's the kind of sensationalist tale that includes things like her 9-year-old child climbing backward up a wall. According to The Indianapolis Star, the case generated more than 800 pages of official records containing interviews with police investigators, psychologists, family members, and even a Catholic priest.
In November 2011, Ammons and her family moved into a one-story home on a quiet residential street. About a month later, they started to experience strange phenomena like eerie noises, swarms of black flies, and shadowy figures.
The Deliverance centers on the Jackson family. Single mother Ebony Jackson needs a fresh start, so she moves her family into a new home. As we all know, many horror genre protagonists have attempted the same thing. It never goes well. Soon after settling in, Ebony and her children start experiencing increasingly strange occurrences.
Here's the official film logline:
"Ebony Jackson, a struggling single mother fighting her personal demons, moves her family into a new home for a fresh start. But when strange occurrences inside the home raise the suspicions of Child Protective Services and threaten to tear the family apart, Ebony soon finds herself locked in a battle for her life and the souls of her children. "
Andra Day stars as Ebony Jackson. She previously worked with Daniels on The People vs. Billie Holiday, a role that won her a Golden Globe and earned her an Oscar nomination.
The Deliverance also stars Glenn Close, Mo'Nique, Anthony B. Jenkins, Miss Lawrence, Demi Singleton, and Tasha Smith, with Omar Epps, Caleb McLaughlin, and Aunjanue Ellis-Taylor. It will be released in select theaters on August 16 and on Netflix on August 30. You can add the film to your Netflix watchlist to receive a notification when it drops.
