Horror's Greatest, In a Violent Nature, and everything coming to Shudder in September
By Carla Davis
Can we all agree that September is definitely the start of the Halloween season? I mean, for some of us, it starts right after the 4th of July, but in general, September really kicks things off. Shudder is definitely gearing up for Halloween, and its September schedule reflects that.
In September, Shudder will be rolling out three new original films, an original series, along with The Last Drive-In: Nightmareathon and watch parties each Friday night. So, let’s take a look at what’s on the roster for September on Shudder!
September 1:
The Last Drive-In: Nightmareathon (debuts August 30, but is available to stream on demand September 1)– Join Joe Bob Briggs, Darcy the Mail Girl, Yuki, John Brennan and the rest of the crew as they celebrate the final episode of their sixth season. This super-sized episode will consist of six “killer” films that have yet to be announced.
Salem’s Lot – Based on the novel by Stephen King, this vampire-in-a-small-town tale has twice been made into a miniseries. The original was adapted into feature-film length, and that’s the version you will be able to watch on Shudder in September.
Candyman – In this iconic 1992 film, a grad student (Virginia Madsen) researching various urban legends happens upon the story of Candyman. The legendary spirit is said to appear whenever you say his name five times in front of a mirror. He also viciously kills you, so it’s not recommended.
The Funhouse – After spending an evening at a local carnival, a group of teens make the ill-fated decision to sneak into the carnival's fun house after closing. Unfortunately, a disfigured masked killer is also inside the dark ride.
The People Under the Stairs – Wes Craven wrote and directed this one, in which young Fool is convinced by two burglars to help them break into their landlord’s home. Once inside, they discover children who have been tortured and imprisoned, and they must figure out how to get out alive.
Shocker – Serial killer Horace Pinker murdered over thirty people before he was apprehended. Though he was executed in the electric chair, Pinker is able to return by using the electricity thanks to a deal he has made with the devil.
September 2:
Basket Case – Duane was born conjoined with his horribly deformed brother Belial, but the two were separated via surgery. Neither of them was happy about it, and Duane keeps Belial hidden in a large basket. Together, the brothers work to take vengeance on the doctors who performed the surgery. *Basket Case was featured on the original The Last Drive-In marathon, and that episode will also be available to stream.
September 3:
Horror’s Greatest (Shudder Original series) – Part one of this series makes its debut on August 27, and the series will premiere a new episode each Tuesday through September 24. Horror-centric actors, directors, composers, special effects masters and writers impart their wisdom regarding all things horror movie related. Themes explored will include tropes, sub-genres and foreign horror films.
September 6:
The Demon Disorder (Shudder Original) – In this Australian film, Graham is contacted by his estranged brother Jake. He claims their younger brother Phillip is being tormented by their father, who is dead. The brothers join forces to fight off the angry spirit.
September 7:
All You Need is Death – A young couple finds themselves in grave danger when they accidently record a cursed folk song.
September 9:
Popcorn – In this beloved cult favorite, college students decide to organize a horror movie marathon at the abandoned Dreamland theater. It’s a more dangerous job than they imagined, thanks to a crazed murdered who starts to go after the organizers.
Blue Sunshine – Los Angeles is experiencing some pretty strange murders committed by people who suddenly go crazy and lose their hair. When Jerry is accused, he goes on the run, determined to discover what is going on. Could it be Blue Sunshine LSD, which the killers seem to have taken ten years earlier?
The Living Dead at Manchester Morgue – “A cop chases two hippies suspected of a series of Manson family-like murders; unbeknownst to him, the real culprits are the living dead.”
September 13:
In a Violent Nature (Shudder Original film) – The dead body of Johnny has been encased in a collapsed fire tower deep in the woods for 60 years, held there by a mysterious locket. When the locket is removed, Johnny is resurrected and seeks to murder the teens who stole the locket.
September 23:
Eight Eyes – Cass and Gav are a struggling copy vacationing in Serbia when a local who calls himself St. Peter offers to be their guide. Soon, their sightseeing begins to feel dangerous.
September 27:
Oddity (Shudder Original film) – Ted and his wife Dani are renovating a house in the country when Dani is murdered. While everyone believes the murder was committed by a patient who escaped from a mental health hospital, said patient is later discovered to be dead. Dani’s blind sister Darcy shows up a year later, determined to discover the truth using things she has accumulated for her collection of cursed items.
Shudder TV will also be hosting a watch party on Friday nights at 9:00 p.m. ET. Each party will include a double feature, including:
September 13 – Neo-Slasher Double Feature – Lake Bodom and In a Violent Nature
September 20 – Zombie Weekend – The Sadness and Undead
September 27 – Modern Master Double Feature – Oddity and Caveat
