Longlegs and American Horror Story fans should keep an eye out for Grotesquerie

The new FX series releasing this September has a lot in common with Oz Perkins's film.

FX recently dropped the first full-length trailer for the upcoming horror drama series Grotesquerie from creators Ryan Murphy, Jon Robin Baitz, and Joe Baken, and I couldn't help but notice a certain kinship between the show and one of this year's biggest horror movies, Longlegs.

Grotesquerie is set in a community plagued by a mysterious killer committing a series of gruesome and horrific crimes, including murdering an entire family. Detective Lois Tyron (Niecy Nash) is in charge of tracking down the killer, leading her to the town's sinister underbelly, which appears to include a cult and a lot of other freaky stuff. She's assisted by a local nun/investigative journalist, Sister Megan (Micaela Diamond).

Grotesquerie and Longlegs appear to share many similarities at first glance:

  • Serial killer with potential satanic connections
  • Presence of a nun/religious themes (although in Longlegs the "nun" in question was pretending)
  • A potential supernatural twist
  • A grimy air of real evil and darkness, creepy crime scene photos, and super disturbing murder scenes

And no, I'm not suggesting one plagiarized the other or anything like that, just that the series and movie appear to complement one another, which is great for those of us who really enjoyed Longlegs because that means we have something new to check out this September!

Grotesquerie isn't connected to American Horror Story, but more AHS is on the way

You can't mention super-producer Ryan Murphy without mentioning his long-running anthology horror series, American Horror Story. The show was previously renewed for a 12th and 13th season, with season 12, subtitled "Delicate," debuting last year.

Those checking out the Grotesquerie trailer might be curious if the new series will have any connections to American Horror Story, but there hasn't been anything to suggest that yet. The two shows don't even share cast members. Grotesquerie looks a little more grounded than the typical campiness often found in the anthology show, though that doesn't mean there won't be any easter eggs or references.

We won't be getting any new episodes of American Horror Story this year, but American Horror Story was officially renewed for season 13. That said, with the show's quality taking a deep nosedive in recent years, I wouldn't be surprised if season 13 also ends up being the show's last.

So far, we haven't received any details about the next season of American Horror Story, but it seems likely that it will air in time for Halloween 2025.
