Longlegs and the 5 best Neon horror movies to watch right now
Indie film production and distribution company Neon has been giving A24 a run for its money in recent years, pleasantly surprising audiences with their awesome, often shocking, and always original movies. Alongside award-winners like Parasite, Anatomy of a Fall, and Triangle of Sadness is also an impressive list of horror movies that are sure to intrigue any fan of the genre. Having been a huge fan of Neon for the past couple of years, I instantly add any horror movie to my watch list if I see the company's logo attached now.
A new Neon horror movie, Longlegs, has been making headlines, and for good reason! The movie is fantastic. But it's hardly the only great scary flick the company has under its belt. Here are its six best horror movies — yes, including Longlegs.
Longlegs (2024)
Directed by Oz Perkins (son of Anthony Perkins and Berry Berenson!), Longlegs is one of the best horror movies of the past decade. The film stars Maika Monroe as an FBI agent named Lee Harker who is assigned to a decades-long case following a series of murder-suicides. Suspected of having psychic abilities, Lee works alongside an Agent Carter (Blair Underwood) to track down a person who signs their letters "Longlegs." I don't even want to tell you more about the movie's plot, as going into this one as blind as possible is the right move. I didn't even check out the trailer before watching it, and that strategy paid off.
Having seen Perkins' 2015 movie The Blackcoat's Daughter, I can tell Longlegs has the filmmaker's signature style of dark, atmospheric cinematography and storytelling that delivers a sense of dread from the very first scene. I need to go back and watch his other projects now! Monroe gives a fantastic performance in Longlegs, as does her co-star Nicolas Cage. Horror actresses Alicia Witt and Kiernan Shipka also have standout roles. If you're a horror fan, there's no reason for you to skip Longlegs.

Crimes of the Future (2022)
David Cronenberg's most recent film before this year's The Shrouds is Crimes of the Future, a sexy, unpredictable, and compelling experience that'll have you engaged from start to finish. The movie follows an artist duo played by Viggo Mortensen and Léa Seydoux who perform surgery on humans in front of a live audience. Of course, this is a Cronenberg film, so it is body horror. If that's not your thing, Crimes of the Future might just make you queasy. But if you're weird like me and enjoy getting grossed out, I highly recommend it.
Alongside Mortensen and Seydoux, Kristen Stewart stars in Crimes of the Future as an employee of the National Organ Registry who takes an interest in the performance. The neo-noir feel is enough to suck you in from the start and the movie itself is like nothing you've ever seen before. It might not be one of Cronenberg's most popular movies, but it is one of his best.

Infinity Pool (2023)
Speaking of Cronenberg, his son Brandon Cronenberg makes this list two times, having worked with Neon for his second and third films. I promise I'm not being hyperbolic, but Infinity Pool is another one of my favorite horror movies of the past decade. Neon is killing it in this genre, I'm telling you! The film stars Alexander Skarsgård and Cleopatra Coleman as a married couple vacationing at a tropical resort. Their marriage has its fair share of problems, but conflicts don't really arise until they get close with another couple at the resort, played by Mia Goth and Jalil Lespert.
After a major accident occurs during a night outside the resort, the couple learns just how disturbing the fictional country they're vacationing in is. But not as disturbing as the couple they're now spending time with. Infinity Pool does a great job totally consuming the viewer with its hard-to-look-away storyline, surreal visuals and soundtrack, and strong performances. I could watch this movie 100 times and it wouldn't be enough.

The Lodge (2019)
Taking it back a few years, The Lodge is a dark, creepy, and at times shocking psychological horror film that reminds us that children can be awful! Directed by Veronika Franz and Severin Fiala — the duo that brought us Goodnight Mommy — the film follows a dad who brings his fiancé along on a Christmas trip with his two young kids. Mourning their mother who recently died, the children do not approve of their future mother-in-law and have no trouble letting that be known. But when their dad is called back to work, the three have to learn how to co-exist, especially when the temperatures get colder and they seemingly begin to lose their sanity.
The wonderful Riley Keough plays the fiancé, Grace, who has skeletons of her own. She grew up in a cult and was the sole survivor of a horrible tragedy. Richard Armitage, Alicia Silverstone, Jaeden Martell, and Lia McHugh also star. The Lodge is chilling and full of dread, and it's one I consider very underrated.

Possessor (2020)
Brandon Cronenberg's follow-up to his directorial full-length feature debut is Possessor, which gained widespread attention and acclaim from film buffs. The daring sci-fi horror film follows an assassin named Tasya Vos (Andrea Riseborough) who's able to kill people by taking control of their bodies. As the premise suggests, the movie is highly original and strange in all the best ways. It provides a visceral experience you can't look away from — even when you might want to. The film pushes the envelope and takes you on a twisty ride you'll never forget.
Possessor also stars the fantastic Christopher Abbott alongside Jennifer Jason Leigh and Sean Bean in supporting roles. As gripping as Vos' career assignments are her inner struggles which the film also follows closely.

Titane (2021)
Last but certainly not least on the list is Titane, Julia Ducournau's wild ride of a film that combines body horror with psychological drama, sci-fi, and mystery. Following a young woman named Alexia (Agathe Rousselle) who has a titanium plate in her head, the movie takes us on her journey from erotic dancer to serial killer on the run. As the story unfolds, the viewer quickly realizes there's no way you could ever predict what's next. The movie won the Palme d'Or at the 2021 Cannes Film Festival, a surprising yet totally deserved achievement.
With only two full-length films on her filmography — the other being 2016's Raw — Ducournau is a hugely talented filmmaker worth keeping an eye on. Titane marked Rousselle's acting debut in a full-length film, and she is incredibly impressive in it. The film also stars Vincent Lindon and Garance Marillier in supporting roles.
