Matt Smith leads Starve Acre and 4 more horror titles releasing this week
By Mads Lennon
It's a good week for actors who have or are currently starring in HBO shows set in the Game of Thrones universe as a former Game of Thrones star and a current House of the Dragon star both have horror movies coming out this Friday!
Additionally, the season finale of Presumed Innocent premieres this Wednesday on Apple TV+, so we'll finally learn who killed Carolyn and Evil airs a new installment this week as well. Previously, this week's episode of Evil, which is the tenth in the fourth season, was going to be the season finale but since Paramount+ canceled the show, we're getting four extra episodes to wrap things up in the coming weeks.
Here's what horror fans have to look forward to this week!
Starve Acre (Theaters & VOD, July 26)
Matt Smith stars in this dread-inducing British folk horror film about an archeologist investigating an ancient evil on his land that appears to be centered around an old oak tree. Based on the novel by Andrew Michael Hurley, Starve Acre digs into a family infected by something primeval that existed long before their arrival.
The Beast Within (Theaters, July 26)
Smith isn't the only actor from the world of Game of Thrones with a new movie out this week. Jon Snow himself, Kit Harington, offers a riveting and tense performance in The Beast Within.
Actually, this movie and Starve Acre would make a great double feature, as both are about isolated families struggling with evil forces beyond their control. Starve Acre has an outside force pressing in on them while The Beast Within deals with the family's patriarch struggling to conceal a transformative ancestral secret from his young daughter.
The Last Breath (VOD, July 26)
Another shark attack movie hits VOD this weekend, perfect for summertime viewing or those who didn't get enough shark stuff during Discovery's Shark Week.
In The Last Breath, the owner of a touristy business in the Virgin Islands teams up with a college dropout for a legendary dive to find the lost wreckage of a former warship. But their underwater expedition takes a nightmarish turn when they find themselves trapped 30 meters down, low on air, and surrounded by sharks.
The Strangers: Chapter 1 (DVD, July 23)
Physical media collectors can own the newest movie in The Strangers franchise this week as the film releases on 4K, Blu-ray, and DVD this week. The physical version includes extras like a feature commentary track with star Madelaine Petsch and producer Courtney Solomon.
The Girl in the Pool (Theaters & VOD, July 26)
Freddie Prinze Jr. and Monica Potter star in this domestic thriller about a man whose life spirals out of control when his mistress is murdered and her body discovered in the pool of his family home. The film will be released digitally, on demand, and in theaters this Friday.
