Patrick Dempsey continues playing detectives in the horror genre, joins Miami PD in Dexter prequel Original Sin

Apparently Patrick Dempsey really enjoys playing police detectives in the horror genre. The actor best known for playing neurosurgeon Derek Shepherd for 11 seasons on Grey's Anatomy is stepping into a police uniform again for the upcoming Dexter prequel series Original Sin.
Variety reports that he'll play series regular Captain Aaron Spencer of Miami Metro Homicide. Spencer shares an important connection to Dexter's adoptive father, Harry Morgan, who will be played by Christian Slater. The press release only described their relationship as one that has spanned several decades but doesn't elaborate on whether it's friendly or antagonistic in nature.
Prior to landing this role, Dempsey played Detective Mark Kincaid in Scream 3 and, more recently, Sheriff Eric Newlon in the 2023 slasher film Thanksgiving. For whatever reason, it seems like he's drawn to the police force on-screen! Outside of horror, Dempsey also recently reprised his role as Robert Philip in the Enchanted sequel Disenchanted for Disney and has been starring in the lead role on the thriller series Devils.
Original Sin begins filming later this month in Miami and takes place 15 years before the events of its parent series, Dexter, which ran from 2006 to 2013 on Showtime. A revival, Dexter: New Blood, aired from 2021 to 2022 and followed Dexter reconnecting with his son Harrison.
The prequel series follows a young Dexter, played by Patrick Gibson, as he "transitions from student to avenging serial killer" with the help of his father Harry Morgan. Original showrunner Clyde Phillips returns as showrunner and executive producer for the new series.
Original Sin has also cast many of the young counterparts to popular characters from the main show like Detective Angel Batista and Miami PD's first female homicide detective, Maria LeGuerta. James Martinez will play young Batista and Christina Milian has been cast as LeGuerta, respectively.
In the press release, Paramount Global co-CEO Chris McCarthy released a statement regarding Dempsey's casting, saying:
"Patrick Dempsey is a beloved actor who is internationally known for the iconic characters he has played and his performances. We are thrilled to have him join our all-star cast of 'Dexter: Original Sin,' the highly anticipated origin story of the franchise."
