5 scary werewolf movies worth watching (and 2 you can skip)
Werewolf movies are a subgenre of horror films that center around werewolves, and while they appear to be less popular than vampire movies, there are still a good amount of fans out there who enjoy them. Are you a werewolf enthusiast looking for a fright? If so, we shared a list of some of the scariest werewolf movies that'll leave you unsettled after watching them. We even threw in two werewolf flicks that are still enjoyable to watch but just aren't scary. We recommend skipping over those.
However, keep in mind that whether or not you find the werewolf movies we shared below scary is subjective and depends on individual tastes and what you find frightening.
The Wolfman (2010)
Watch! Directed by Joe Johnston, The Wolfman serves as remake to the 1941 gothic horror film The Wolf Man. It stars Academy Award-winning actor Benicio del Toro as a Shakespearean actor living in America, who returns to his ancestral home in England after his brother's mysterious disappearance. But upon his return, he's attacked by a werewolf and severely injured. Although he is nursed back to health, he soon finds himself going through a horrifying transformation into a werewolf.
Joining del Toro in the cast are Anthony Hopkins, Emily Blunt, Hugo Weaving, Geraldine Chaplin, Art Malik, Antony Sher, and many others.
Ginger Snaps (2000)
Watch! Considered both scary and thought-provoking, Ginger Snaps centers on two morbid sisters who find their bond tested when one of them is bitten by a deadly werewolf and then slowly starts to transform into a werewolf themselves. Emily Perkins and Katharine Isabelle star as the two death-obsessed sisters, Brigitte Fitzgerald and Ginger Fitzgerald. Kris Lemche, Mimi Rogers, Jesse Moss, Danielle Hampton, John Bourgeois, Peter Keleghan, and others join them in the cast.
Twilight (2008)
Skip! Twilight is a good movie, but it's not scary at all. It mainly centers on the forbidden romance of a human teenage girl (Kristen Stewart) and a 108-year-old vampire (Robert Pattinson), but it also features a love triangle between her, the vampire, and a werewolf (Taylor Lautner). Overall, if you're looking to be spooked by some vicious werewolves, you might want to look elsewhere because you won't get that with this film.
Silver Bullet (1985)
Watch! Based on the 1983 novella Cycle of the Werewolf by Stephen King, Silver Bullet follows a paraplegic boy named Marty Coslaw who is convinced that the unexplained brutal killings plaguing his small town are the work of a werewolf. This leads him on a mission to uncover the monster's identity and capture it once and for all. Corey Haim stars as the protagonist, Marty Coslaw. Gary Busey, Everett McGill, Megan Follows, Terry O'Quinn, Bill Smitrovich, and others also star.
The Howling (1981)
Watch! Known for its special effects and chilling atmosphere, The Howling follows a television news anchor, who after going through a traumatic encounter with a serial killer, is sent to a remote mountain resort for recovery. But she soon discovers that the resort is not what it seems as well as the residents. The residents are actually werewolves! Dee Wallace, Patrick Macnee, Dennis Dugan, Christopher Stone, Belinda Balaski, Kevin McCarthy, John Carradine, Slim Pickens, and Elisabeth Brooks all star in this classic werewolf movie.
Teen Wolf (1985)
Skip! Teen Wolf is a comedy werewolf movie designed to be humorous and entertaining, so it's in no way scary. It follows an ordinary high school student named Scott Howard (Michael J. Fox), who after discovering that he's a werewolf, finds himself having to embrace his new identity and everything that comes along with it. James Hampton, Scott Paulin, Susan Ursitti, Jerry Levine, Jay Tarses, and others join Fox in the cast.
Dog Soldiers (2002)
Watch! Dog Soldiers centers around a squad of soldiers on a military training mission in the remote Scottish wilderness. But they soon find themselves fighting to survive against a pack of relentless werewolves. Sean Pertwee, Liam Cunningham, Kevin McKidd, and Emma Cleasby all star in this werewolf flick.
