Scream star Mason Gooding joins Olivia Holt in campy horror rom-com Heart Eyes
By Mads Lennon
We previously reported that New Line Cinema is developing a horror-based spinoff of the Rebel Wilson-led rom-com Isn't It Romantic titled Isn't It Scary. And now Spyglass appears to be treading into the genre-bending territory with the upcoming original horror romantic comedy Heart Eyes.
According to an exclusive from Deadline, Heart Eyes will star Cruel Summer vet Olivia Holt and Scream alum Mason Gooding. The film revolves around a murderer nicknamed the "Heart Eyes Killer" who targets couples. When two co-workers get roped into working overtime on Valentine's Day, the killer mistakes them for a couple, and they spend the evening running for their lives.
Heart Eyes is currently filming in New Zealand. Josh Ruben (Werewolves Within, Scare Me) will direct the film, co-written by Phillip Murphy (The Hitman's Wife's Bodyguard) and Freaky scribes Christopher Landon and Michael Kennedy. Landon was previously attached to direct the seventh Scream movie, also in the works at Spyglass.
Ruben expressed his excitement for Heart Eyes, saying:
"My love of horror is rivaled only by my love of romantic comedies. I’m excited as hell to mount my most challenging genre bender to date: a brutal slasher in a nostalgic rom-com universe."
Gooding played Chad Meeks-Martin, twin brother of Mindy Meeks-Martin (Jasmin Savoy Brown) in Scream (2022) and Scream VI. Their characters were the niece and nephew of Scream (1996) and Scream 2 character Randy Meeks (Jamie Kennedy).
Some of Gooding's other credits include Booksmart and Love, Victor. Next, he'll star in Kyle Mooney's disaster comedy Y2K. It doesn't seem like Gooding is coming back for the seventh Scream film, which will see Neve Campbell return as Sidney Prescott.
Holt starred in the breakout first season of Freeform's hit show Cruel Summer. She's also no stranger to horror comedy, having starred in the Prime Video original film Totally Killer opposite Kiernan Shipka. She'll next appear in the Peacock comedy series Laid and the holiday rom-com Jingle Bell Heist.
Spyglass also produced Eli Roth's horror comedy film Thanksgiving, so it seems like this is a subgenre they're very interested in pursuing.
