Horror fans, we have some good news to share regarding the highly anticipated I Know What You Did Last Summer legacy sequel. The reboot's director and writer, Jennifer Kaytin Robinson, has revealed that the movie will not ignore the events that happened in the 1998 sequel I Still Know What You Did Last Summer. This means that everything that happened in I Still Know will be a part of the legacy sequel's timeline.

There were rumors that the legacy sequel would ignore the events of the previous sequels, which not only includes I Still Know but also the 2006 slasher I'll Always Know What You Did Last Summer. But it looks like this turned out to be untrue.

Robinson shut down these rumors via X. On July 30, X user CriticalOverlord shared a post stating that the legacy sequel would ignore the events of I Still Know and I Always Know. However, Robinson quickly responded to the post by saying, "it is definitely not? ISKWYDLS is cannon. hope this helps."

While this is confirmation from Robinson that the events of I Still Know will not be erased in the legacy sequel, it's unclear if the events of I'll Always Know will be referenced. However, we can probably infer that the events of the 2006 sequel will not be mentioned in the new movie since Robinson didn't include I Always Know in her response on X.

Besides being the director of the I Know What You Did Last Summer reboot, Robinson also co-wrote the screenplay with Sam Lansky. Leah McKendrick wrote the initial script. Production on the slasher is expected to get started by the end of 2024, with a set theatrical release on July 18, 2025.

Back in February 2023, Jennifer Love Hewitt and Freddie Prinze Jr. were announced to be in negotiations to reprise their roles of Julie James and Ray Bronson in the reboot. In a July 2024 interview with Us Weekly, Prinze Jr. told the news outlet that he's "motivated" to return, but a deal has to be met, and a contract needs to be signed before this can happen.

While it's still unknown if Hewitt and Prinze Jr. will come back for the reboot, we do know who the new cast members of the franchise are. In July 2024, Camila Mendes (Riverdale, Do Revenge), Madelyn Cline (Outer Banks), Sarah Pidgeon (Lazareth), Tyriq Withers (Atlanta), and Jonah Hauer-King (The Little Mermaid) were cast in leading roles. Plot details are still being kept under wraps, but the influence of social media is said to play a part in the movie's plot, according to McKendrick.

Unfortunately, this is all we know about the I Know What You Did Last Summer reboot at the moment. As we learn new information, we'll be sure to come back and share everything we found. So, make sure to stay tuned to 1428 Elm!
