X ending explained, revisiting the 2022 film that kicked off Ti West's trilogy

MaXXXine arrives in theaters the first week of July, and it is already being hyped as one of the most anticipated horror movies of the year, earning acclaim from critics who praise it as a great conclusion to Ti West's horror saga, which started with X in 2022.

A prequel film, Pearl, was released a few months after X and centered on the X antagonist as a young woman. Mia Goth played the roles of both Pearl and Maxine. Next, she returns as aspiring actress Maxine Minx in MaXXXine, which is set six years after the murder spree in Texas. The sole survivor of the events, Maxine makes her way to Los Angeles in the 1980s to pursue her dreams.

Where do we leave off with Maxine Minx at the end of X?

Even though Mia Goth plays Maxine and Pearl, the last time we saw her as Maxine was in July 2022, so the upcoming film MaXXXine will be the first time we will catch up with her character since then.

By the end of X, she had narrowly escaped being massacred along with the rest of her friends on the rural Texan homestead managed by creepy married couple Pearl and Howard. The film ends with Maxine escaping in Howard's truck, killing Pearl in the process by running her over.

Maxine is the only survivor out of her group of friends, with everyone else getting killed off in a myriad of gruesome ways throughout the film by Howard and Pearl.

Maxine's father could play a big role in MaXXXine

At the end of X, it's revealed that the televangelist we've heard preaching on television throughout the film is actually Maxine's father. This is foreshadowed early on as he lambasts his daughter for falling into a life of sin. We later learn his daughter is Maxine, and she's estranged from her dad due to her aspirations of becoming an actress and working in the adult film industry.

X doesn't spend much time with Maxine's father, but he could play a critical role in the next film in the franchise, potentially setting himself up as a villain who tries to indoctrinate his daughter into his way of life.
