Ranking the top 5 death scenes in the Final Destination franchise

A new trailer for Final Destination: Bloodlines has just been released and it has made us nostalgic for the films and wild death sequences of the past.

Bloodlines is the first Final Destination movie we're getting in over a decade, so fans have high expectations for it and based on the death sequences we've seen in previous films, the upcoming movie will have to do something quite extraordinary to top any of our top five favorite kills.

5. Struck by a bus

People might disagree with me on this scene because of its simplicity and lack of gore, but it remains one of my favorites. I'm referring to the scene where Terry gets hit by a bus and dies instantly in the original Final Destination.

It's such a fast, sudden death that it feels almost like a jump scare. But the brutal simplicity of it makes for a moment of brilliant dark comedy. Terry has just finished ranting at her ex-boyfriend Carter, telling him to "drop f**king dead," when the bus comes out of nowhere and whacks her.

4. Gymnastics fumble

Poor, poor Candice. She gets one of the most graphic death scenes in Final Destination 5, maybe one of the most graphic scenes in the franchise. What makes Candice's bone-breaking final moments all the more chilling is that, in real life, gymnastics is genuinely dangerous.

Most of the deaths in the franchise are from mundane things with almost no chance of ever happening in real life. And while I'm not saying this scene would play out the same way in real life, there have been some similarly tragic injuries and deaths within the sport.

3. Swimming pool death

Nick Zano’s character Hunt has a particularly silly and bloody death scene in the fourth movie. It features him trying to retrieve a coin from the bottom of a pool, only to get trapped by the overpowering drain suction. The drain ultimately sucks out Hunt’s organs through his anus, causing a horrifically gory explosion.

This sequence was quite memorable because many of us grew up hearing urban legends about drains killing people this way. As a kid, I also feared getting sucked down the bathtub drain. I remember reading the Chuck Palahniuk short “Guts,” which also features a disturbing scene like the one in this film.

2. Log truck pile-up

Final Destination 2 opened with one of the scariest premonition scenes in the series, featuring a logging truck derailment that results in countless gruesome deaths, including one guy getting impaled by a massive tree trunk.

Anyone who has watched this movie and felt impacted by it surely thinks about the devastation that truck caused whenever driving behind one in real life, or any kind of truck carrying rod-like cargo.

1. Tanning beds to coffins

Out of all of the deaths featured in the Final Destination franchise, this is probably the most frequently mentioned alongside the logging truck and highway catastrophe. This death scared countless people away from using tanning beds for good.

Best friends Ashley and Ashlyn literally fry and burn to a crisp when a series of items fall on the beds and temperature gauge, cranking the heat until they’re cooked. Following the death scene is a darkly hilarious transition to their coffins, mimicking the tanning bed layout.
